He followed it up with a century (126) against West Indies at Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi, and a decent bowling performance. 

On his first tour outside of the sub-continent in England, Kapil got his first 5-wicket haul and took 16 wickets in the series but struggled with the bat. In the 1979 World Cup, his performance was ordinary and so was India’s. 

In the home series against Australia, Kapil established himself as India’s premier fast bowler when he picked 2 five-fers and ended the series with 28 wickets against Australia. His all-around performances continued from there and Kapil was named the Indian captain in the 1982-83 season when Gavaskar was rested.

1983 World Cup performance:

Kapil was the captain of India in the 1983 Prudential Cup and led the team incredibly well. He looked like a man on a mission and motivated his teammates also. Kapil’s individual performance in the cup was great overall, he scored 303 runs in 8 innings at an average of 60.60 and took 12 crucial wickets in the tournament.

The Kapil Dev world record innings of 175* came against Zimbabwe in a must-win match in the World Cup. India eventually lifted the cup and Kapil was the main hero of this incredible feat.

Kapil served Indian cricket till October 17, 1994, played 131 Tests and 225 ODIs and gave Indians many moments to enjoy and celebrate his cricket. Kapil was India’s premier fast bowler till his retirement.
