100+ lawsuits filed against manufacturers of chemical hair straighteners and relaxers

More than 100 lawsuits have been filed by women who were diagnosed with cancer against manufacturers of Chemical Hair Straighteners and hair relaxers. The lawsuits allege that using chemical straighteners or relaxers is linked to an increased risk of developing uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, endometriosis, and fibroids.

Lawsuits Filed Against Manufacturers of Chemical Hair Straighteners & Relaxers

Because these lawsuits raise similar allegations – namely, that chemical hair straighteners and hair relaxers increase a woman’s risk of developing cancer – the lawsuits have been consolidated in a multidistrict litigation (MDL) in the Northern District of Illinois. Consolidated these cases in an MDL will expedite the discovery and trial process to make it easier for women who used hair straighteners or relaxers to receive a settlement.

Lawyers involved in the chemical hair straighteners and hair relaxers litigation say that they expect that hundreds of additional lawsuits will be filed by women who were diagnosed with uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, endometriosis, or fibroids after using these products.

Chemical Hair Straighteners & Relaxers Linked to Increased Cancer Risk

Concerns about the dangers of chemical hair straighteners and hair relaxers were first raised in October 2022, when a study published by National Institute Of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) found that women who had used these products were more likely to be diagnosed with uterine cancer.

According to the study, women who had frequently used chemical hair straighteners or relaxers were 250% more likely to develop uterine cancer than women who had never used these products. About 4% of women in the study who had used hair straighteners or relaxers developed uterine cancer, compared to only 1.6% of non-users.

The majority of women diagnosed with cancer after using chemical hair straighteners or hair relaxers are African-American. Black women are no more likely than women of other races to develop cancer after using hair straighteners or relaxers. However, because the use of these products is so widespread among African-Americans, Black women represent the largest number of hair straightener or relaxers users who developed cancer.

In addition to their link to uterine cancer, hair straighteners and hair relaxers have also been linked to an increased risk of ovarian cancer, breast cancer, endometrial cancer, and fibroids.
