Indian Navy to Consider Building Three New Submarines with Advanced Propulsion Technology

The Indian Navy is set to propose the construction of three new submarines with advanced propulsion technology at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in partnership with a foreign vendor. The move comes as part of the country’s efforts to bolster its defense capabilities and strengthen its position in the Indian Ocean, which is vital for trade and commerce. The submarines will be equipped with air independent propulsion (AIP) technology, which will allow them to stay underwater for longer and operate silently. The proposal is expected to be presented to the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) for approval. The navy is seeking to enhance its underwater warfare capabilities and maintain a strong fleet of submarines amid growing maritime security concerns in the region. The new submarines are expected to complement India’s existing fleet of domestic-made and foreign-built submarines.
