Dr. Laxminadh Sivaraju – Best consultant neurosurgeon for neuro related problems

Dr. Laxminadh Sivaraju, Neurosurgeon

I am Dr. Laxminadh Sivaraju. I did my MBBS at the prestigious Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad, and my neurosurgery training at one of the top medical college hospitals, CMCH (Christian Medical College Hospital, Vellore). After completion of training, I worked at the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Whitefield, Bangalore. I did a fellowship at the University of Griefswald, under the mentorship of Prof. Henry Shroeder in "Minimal Invasive Skull Base Endoscopy." For the last four years, I have been working at Continental Hospital in Hyderabad.

I do deal with patients with Brain and spine related problems. I do surgeries for brain tumours, spine tumours, disc prolapse, head injuries, spine injuries, brain strokes, and seizures. We thoroughly evaluate and examine the Patient in detail and do the necessary investigations to reach the diagnosis. I do thorough and detailed counselling with the patient and relatives prior to any surgical intervention. I do explain the surgery procedure, the duration of surgery, how I am going to operate, the time taken to come out of anaesthesia, post surgery care, and precautions during the recovery period.

We do use the latest cutting edge technology with high end microscopes, neuro navigation, and CUSA, and we do awake craniotomies and minimally invasive techniques for keyhole surgeries. I do emphasise the early, speedy recovery of patients following surgery and getting back to their occupation.

I do see more patients with hypertension, anxiety causing brain stroke, otherwise called haemorrhage within the brain, head injury, and spine injury following road traffic accidents, falls from heights, or slip and fall. In the elderly age group, I do come across patients with neck pain, low back ache, sciatica, spondylosis, and disc related problems, and most of them fall under degenerative spine problems. IT sector people come with neck pain, back pain, and small joint pain in the hands. We have to listen, understand their problem, and give proper guidance and suggestions.

We do focus on lifestyle changes on the professional or personal front. Most of the pains we call psychosomatic symptoms are due to an underlining factor at the personal or family level. They impact brain function, and these patients tend to be more emotional and sensitive to pain and discomfort. These problems result in behavioural problems and sleep disorders. We provide proper counselling for these patients.

Best care for neurological patients

Our clinic or hospital setup should be able to accommodate patients from different professions with different work hours. Always prefer to have a prior appointment to prevent undue waiting hours, particularly for patients with neuro-related problems who come in wheel chairs or stretchers. We need to make proper arrangements so that they do not feel any discomfort. We see patients with less sensorium, we should properly examine them and give proper guidance to their relatives. Patients with critical illnesses and long standing comorbidities need special attention and regular follow up.

Supportive treatment for brain tumour

Patients with brain tumours need to be counselled about the radiation and chemotherapy treatments that may be necessary, particularly for a few types of cancer, and the precautions to be taken during these treatments. Patients with head injuries and spine injuries need long term rehabilitation, supportive care, and nursing assistance. Relatives need proper guidance and motivation.

Special care for Neurological conditions with Dr. Laxminadh Sivaraju

Neurosurgery is always and most of the time associated with emergencies, with unpredictable calls that we have to attend immediately, and a few times we need immediate emergency surgery. During that crucial hour, we have to discuss and explain to the relatives and patient the nature of the disease, its long term sequel, the mode of treatment, the objective of treatment, and the best possible outcome. We have to understand relatives and family members emotions and give them proper motivation. We see different age groups of patients, from neonates to the elderly up to the 9th decade. As a neurosurgeon, I operate on neonates with hydrocephalus and myelomeningocele repair, and at the same time, I operate on 8th or 9th decade patients with chronic subdural hematomas, a type of blood clot. In these scenarios, we have to understand the emotional bonding of patients with family members during counselling.

As nervous tissue is highly sensitive, we have to be very careful during surgery as we are operating on highly critical brain and spinal cord structures, and any side effects may not be tolerated by the patient. We have to use a high end microscope or endoscope to visualise these crucial organs during surgery. We have to use meticulous techniques to handle these sensitive areas. Neuronavigation and keyhole surgery help with early recovery.

We have to attend various national and international conferences and get updates on the latest developments.

Achievements of Dr. Laxminadh Sivaraju

On my personal front, I attended almost 50 conferences and workshops, presented more than 10 platform presentations, got the NSI (neurosurgical society of India) award for best paper presentation, and published 35 plus original papers and case reports in various journals at international levels. I am on the editorial board of a few journals and a reviewer for a few.

So far, we have operated on more than 6,000 surgeries, including both brain and spine, for various pathologies like congenital, paediatric, trauma, oncology, spine, and disc related problems, with the best outcomes possible. Being able to gain trust among patients and fellow colleagues is a memorable achievement.
