Some people might not like that you can’t control what happens in the game, but fans of split stories and player choice should love what’s on offer here. The game can be really scary at times because it takes place in a summer camp that looks a lot like the one in Friday the 13th. With almost 200 different ends, the game can be played over and over again. It can also be played by up to eight people at once.

2. Dead Island 2

Dead Island 2 finally came out in April 2023, after being stuck in development hell for many years. Like its predecessor, the game’s main goal is to give players a fun time rather than scare them. This may be a good thing and help it stand out from other open-world zombie games like Dying Light 2 and Days Gone.

The story is pretty simple, and some of the game features can get boring after a while, but other than that, it’s hard to find too many problems with what’s here. The game runs well, looks great, and, perhaps most importantly, it’s a lot of fun to mess with zombies, especially once players get a few more guns.

3. The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners Tourist Edition

Most of the best PS5 horror games have a big focus on immersion, and The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners is no different. In fact, the Tourist Edition is one of the most engaging games on the system, both because it works with PSVR 2 and because the graphics are much better.

Fighting off a group of zombies in virtual reality can be very scary, especially as it gets darker outside. It’s also pretty exciting, since players need to use both melee tools and guns to stay alive. The game’s 2022 update gives those who can’t get enough more of the same, while also continuing the Tourist’s story.

4. Resident Evil Village

When most people think of Resident Evil Village, the first thing that comes to mind is usually Lady Dimitrescu. But the eighth major book in the series is about a lot more than just a weirdly big vampire woman with fingers that can grow. In fact, some of the other boss fights in the game end up being much more scary and memorable.

Whether or not Resident Evil can still be called a zombie series is up for question, but no one would argue that it is not at the top of the survival horror game space. It helped define and popularize the horror genre in the late 1990s, and it still pushes the limits today, replacing the mindless zombies of the past with much scarier enemies as it does so.

5. Returnal

Returnal is a psychological horror game where a lot of the work is done by the mood. With this in mind, it helps that the game’s stunning sci-fi world is beautifully drawn. Everything on planet Atropos looks amazing, which adds to Selene’s sense of impending doom that follows her around like a bad smell.

If you’ve never played a roguelike game before, Returnal might be hard for you at first. When you’re still learning how to play, it can feel like a very unrewarding experience. But once they’ve played for a few hours and gotten the hang of things, they’ll find a unique experience that makes Returnal one of the best horror games on the PS5.

6. Dredge

Dredge is not a typical horror game. Instead, it is an open-world fishing game. But instead of mackerels and herrings, the player will catch all kinds of horrible sea creatures, and even scarier things will be hiding in the depths below their boat.

It’s one of a growing number of games that get a lot of their ideas from the cosmic horror writer H. P. Lovecraft. His work has had a clear effect on different parts of the Dredge’s world. Not only will players be surprised by how scary this indie game can be at times, but they will also be surprised by how fun and addicting the fishing game parts can be.

7. Resident Evil 2

Even though Resident Evil 2 came out more than a quarter of a century ago, it is still considered a classic. But the 2019 remake did a great job of reimagining the game for modern audiences. Thanks to technology advances, the team was able to do things that the original developers could only dream of.

The PS5 version of the remake will come out in the middle of 2022. It will have a higher quality and better backgrounds and filters, which will make the picture much clearer. The game now has support for ray tracing, which can make a big difference in places where the lighting is very important for creating dread or drama. So, this is now the best way to play Resident Evil 2, and any horror game fan who hasn’t played it yet should do so right away.

8. Dead Space

EA’s move to bring back the Dead Space series after a 10-year break shows that Resident Evil isn’t the only great horror game series that deserves a remake. Given how much the original series changed the genre, it would be an insult to say that expectations were high for the remake. However, EA did not let us down for the first time in a long time.

The remake of Dead Space is everything a modern horror game should be. It has dark, eerie settings, great sound design, and some really scary monsters, making it one of the all-time greats in the horror genre. Most of Motive’s changes were definitely for the better, and even the ones that weren’t didn’t change much about how great the game was as a whole.

9. The Last of Us Part 1

Given how much the game focuses on the story, it’s easy to forget that The Last of Us Part 1 is, at its core, a survival horror game. It can make players feel real fear in some places and does a great job of building up tension and anxiety, which it then uses to drive home the point of a particularly important plot point or meeting.

Even though most of the angry people in the game are pretty basic, the animals sick with Cordyceps that chase the players through the empty streets and neighborhoods are anything but.Bloaters, Clickers, and Stalkers can really ruin a player’s day, and knowing that one or more of these enemies could be just around the corner can keep players on the edge of their seats.

10. Resident Evil 4

Given how well Capcom did with the remakes of the first three Resident Evil games, Resident Evil 4 always seemed like it would be one of the best horror games on the PS5. Still, the original game was very different from those that came before it, so there were a lot of questions about how the studio was going to bring the famous horror game up to current standards.

In the end, Capcom made a game that was almost a mix of the original game and the two remakes that came before it. The story hasn’t changed much, but characters like Leon, Luis, and Ashley have been given much more depth. Ashley’s AI has also been greatly improved. Even though the RE4 version had some questionable changes, like trying to force in side quests, most of the changes seem to have been made to improve the user experience, which they do very well.
