“Anyone want something from Timmie’s?” might be a phrase you’ve heard a few times a month, either from coworkers or family members. But that’s not all the valley has to offer - there are plenty of smaller, locally owned Cafes that complement the big chains like McDonalds and Tim Hortons. In Port Alberni, you can drive to Starbucks for that new seasonal drink you’ve seen advertised, or you can walk down the street to a local cafe for something truly unique.  Let’s take a tour around the valley and check out some of the options. A trip down to the Harbour Quay will allow you to explore several shops and cafes. Grabbing a coffee and a homemade cake donut, and then sitting on a park bench gazing out at the water is a classic. Just ask the locals that are there each morning! Up the hill are a couple of options within Uptown, depending on your mood. Whether you’d like to sit by wildflowers and enjoy artisan pizza with your coffee or check out some books at a funky steam-punk-inspired cafe, there is a place for everyone here.  Along the Somass River, a family has renovated an old general store to offer crafted beverages and Island-made gifts. Stop by the Clutesi Marina and you may come across a cafe operating out of a renovated camper. As we said, a hot cup of coffee with a water view is a classic! Or if you prefer a change of scenery, we also know about a casual, comfortable cafe that showcases a local artist each month with obscenely good coffee.  Mom-and-pop restaurants act like cafes in the morning hours but with the added bonus of hot breakfast items. At these places, you will find your traditional bacon and eggs, brunch sandwiches, or branch out with Australian-inspired variations. Good conversation and friendly faces included, at no extra charge! All across town, you will find hole-in-the-wall type cafes that may look unassuming on the outside but are absolutely worth visiting. The attention to detail is what sets them apart from the big chains. Each cafe has a personality for just about anyone, through the decor and the food. Those seeking a quiet, no-fuss place to sit down and read a book will have no problem finding their personal oasis. Others that crave social interaction and a good-flowing conversation will also have plenty of places to choose from. Some act as art galleries, gift shops, meeting places, game rooms, and mini libraries. These “mom-and-pop” cafes go the extra mile for their customers. Not only is it their livelihood, but their passion, too. Friendly staff, homemade baked goods, and exceptional coffee make Port Alberni’s locally-owned cafes a must-visit. And hey, if you can’t let go of your daily double-double, we won’t judge. The valley is full of friendly faces and great coffee, no matter where you go!
