In a significant step towards a future without the hassle of traditional passwords, Whatsapp has unveiled a new feature that allows users to access its Android application using passkeys instead of conventional alphanumeric codes.

Passkeys represent an innovative solution to the problems associated with traditional passwords, which often lead to issues such as forgetfulness, insufficient security, or password reuse. These identification keys, also known as access keys, replace passwords with biometric identification methods such as facial recognition or fingerprint scanning, or even the smartphone’s unlock code. Several major online services, including tech giant Google, have embraced this approach to enhance user security and convenience.

WhatsApp, a Meta-owned messaging platform, has joined the ranks of companies adopting this technology, starting with its Android application. This feature had been in testing since the summer, with a public beta launch initiated last month. Evidently, the trials were successful, as Meta’s messaging service has announced the rollout of passkeys for all its users. While the feature is not yet available to all users, it is expected to be accessible shortly.

Passkeys, in addition to replacing traditional passwords, also serve as a substitute for the second-factor authentication (2FA) method. This means that the process of configuring access to WhatsApp on a new device becomes even quicker and more efficient.

Once a user generates their private passkey, it is securely stored and synchronized in the system’s password manager, either directly in their Google account or Apple’s iCloud Keychain, making it convenient for seamless logins on new devices. As of now, this innovation is not yet available for WhatsApp’s iOS version, but it is expected to be introduced in the near future.
