Bladen Community College Fitness Team Promotes Participation in the Kevin Conner Race – BladenOnline

By Charlotte Smith

Robert W. Villegas, a Registered Nurse and Instructor at Bladen Community College (BCC), embarked on a mission to help individuals break free from the confines of the post-COVID era. Recognizing the uncertainty many faced after the pandemic, he initiated the Bladen Community College Fitness Team to guide people toward a healthier and more fulfilling lifestyle.

Villegas, passionate about his vision, shared his ideas with the college President, Amanda Lee, who “loved the concept.”

The Bladen Community College Fitness Team goes beyond physical fitness, emphasizing mental and spiritual well-being. In its first week, the initiative garnered around three dozen members. Villegas expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “It was like a resounding ‘WOW! Let’s do it!’”

He continued, “Now, we gather every Thursday to explore the scenic trails on the college campus, exchange healthy recipes, and share valuable online resources for a better way of life.”

Villegas explained the essence of the BCC Fitness Team, stating, “We are a community college, and our purpose is to serve the community. The question became, how can we best serve the community?”

That’s when he conceived the idea for the BCC Fitness Team to participate in the upcoming 2023 Trooper Kevin Conner 5K and 1-mile Run. The BCC Fitness Team is actively seeking sponsors for this event, scheduled for October 14. Registration for the race is now open. Villegas hopes there will be at least 30 participants from the fitness team in the race.

The 5k will be the first event the team participates in, but it will only be the beginning of many more to come. Villegas said the group plans to participate in another event this spring at the college.

In conclusion, Villegas shared three key insights on fitness:

  1. Personalized Fitness: Fitness is a subjective concept, unique to each individual. Villegas urged, “Don’t let others dictate what fitness means to you.”
  2. Holistic Well-being: Fitness encompasses physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects. It’s a comprehensive journey towards overall wellness.
  3. Accountability: Having a support system is crucial in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Having someone to hold you accountable for your actions can make a significant difference.
