Kickoff at some football games pushed back due to extreme heat

— It’s August in North Carolina, and that means hot weather is likely.

However, there is extreme heat in the forecast at the end of the week, and as a result, some high school football game times have been pushed back in an effort to miss the worst of the heat.

According to the National Weather Service, high temperatures across most of the state could be in the upper 90s, with the hottest temperatures further south and west in the state. The heat index could be higher than 105 degrees at times, meaning a heat advisory could be issued.

N.C. High School Athletic Association extreme heat policies do not factor in the air temperature alone, instead schools are required to follow guidelines based on the Wet Bulb Globe temperature — it’s a measure of heat stress when in direct sunlight. The wet bulb globe temperature takes into account the temperature in direct sunlight, humidity, wind speed, sun angle, and cloud cover.

For practices, the NCHSAA has strict policies about what is and is not allowed based on the wet bulb globe temperature. If the wet bulb globe temperature is 88 degrees or higher, protective equipment cannot be worn at practices. Anything 90 degrees or higher means all practices are suspended.

However, these policies do not apply to games. Instead, game administrators and officials may require additional water breaks during games when heat is a concern. Schools can also take action like postponing or delaying the start of games, which is what some schools have decided to do this week.
