Liverpool’s next six fixtures after Premier League opener against Chelsea

After coming ever so close to completing the quadruple in 2021/22, Liverpool suffered a major comedown the following season.

Injuries, Sadio Mane’s exit, and a deteriorating midfield all contributed to the Reds’ slump, and while the absence of a holding midfielder remains a concern, there’s no denying that the club have taken great strides to fixing their issues.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are destined to re-emerge as a force in 2023/24, and here’s what their upcoming schedule looks like after an entertaining 1-1 draw with Chelsea to begin the season on Sunday.

Bournemouth were utterly incompetent at Anfield on their last visit, and many thought a trip to Merseyside wouldn’t have been on the cards in 2023/24.

A mini-miracle worked by Gary O’Neil, however, ensured the Cherries preserved their top-flight status and Andoni Iraola will oversee their next trip to Liverpool’s home ground.

Liverpool’s success under Klopp means they don’t often spring a surprise, but they did exactly that on their previous visit to St James’ Park.

The Reds headed into the contest against Eddie Howe’s rising Magpies as underdogs, but they departed Tyneside as 2-0 victors. The bout couldn’t have gone much worse for the home side, who so often blow away teams on home soil.

Aston Villa were the latest to feel Newcastle United’s wrath at St James’ on Matchday 1.

Aston Villa succumbed to a Magpie blitz to open up their 2023/24 campaign. Unai Emery, who masterminded the club’s ascent to European football last season, will be hoping the thumping defeat isn’t a sign of things to come.

Emery’s side have another tough test on the road early on as they begin September away at Liverpool. The spoils were shared at Anfield last time out, with Villa failing to beat the Reds since they famously thrashed them 7-2 at Villa Park during the eerie times of empty stadiums.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are in a state of disarray at the start of the new season, with many tipping the West Midlands club for the drop. Supporters will hope that Gary O’Neil supplies stability in the wake of Julen Lopetegui’s departure, but it’s another mammoth task for the former Bournemouth boss.

Molineux was once a tricky venue to visit, but it looks like it’ll be a happy hunting ground for the Premier League’s elite in 2023/24.

Liverpool’s fifth-place finish last time out means they’ll be competing in the Europa League for the first time since Klopp’s debut season, when they were beaten in the final by Sevilla – who else?

The Reds are the current favourites to go all the way in UEFA’s second-tier competition, and Klopp will undoubtedly use Thursday nights to give some of Liverpool’s flourishing young talent senior minutes. Pre-season star Ben Doak is one to keep an eye on throughout the club’s Europa League campaign.

Their group-stage opponents have not yet been revealed, but we do know their first game will be played on 21 September.

Liverpool’s TV streak continues well into September as they play host to the Europa Conference League winners West Ham United.

The Hammers are another club who’ve struggled on the red side of the Mersey in recent years, with their last triumph at Anfield coming in 2015.

West Ham’s links to Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire mean there could be a hint of Manchester added to this upcoming clash.
