For today’s Horse Racing Tips, our analyst James Boyle looks at the flat racing meeting at Pontefract with two selections now online.

16:50 Pontefract – Rambuso Creek – 1pt @ 8/1

Siding with hold up horses around Pontefract can be a dodgy approach at the best of times but Rambuso Creek has lined out here on four occasions and finished second on all bar one of those. When he didn’t finish second, it was the one time he was ridden more prominently, albeit on soft.

His form this season hasn’t been good, never involved first time up at Beverley when seeming in need of the outing and then at Ascot he may not have taken to first-time cheekpieces. He was more forward in the field there compared to his usual running style and burned his petrol early enough.

A few months have passed since then, indicating that there may have been a problem, but he has won after two months away and finished second to the well-treated Rayong over C&D last season following a similar break. That adds hope that he isn’t the type to need a recent spin to be at his best level.

The handicapper is giving him a chance as well, his mark easing a further 3lbs to 77, and he is capable of running to the mid-80’s when on-song. The ground won’t be a problem and as long as the pace doesn’t get away from him, I expect that he’ll be in with a chance coming down to the final furlong.

17:20 Pontefract – Golden Apollo – 1pt @ 8/1

Golden Apollo achieved his last success when dropping back to a mark of 70 and running over 6f at Pontefract, so I’m hoping history can repeat itself. His last two runs haven’t been great, which could worry anyone assessing the race, but both of them came at 7f and he prefers the tempo of a sprint.

He tends to be held up as well so an optimal set of circumstances is always needed, but there could be a contested pace and that would increase the chances of him being pulled into the equation properly. Emperor Caradoc, Ghathanfar and Corinthia Knight are the most likely trio to push the pace.

The selection’s most recent attempt in a sprint yielded a solid one-length defeat and could be worth upgrading on account of the ground and track combination leading to a sharp enough test being offered up. I think he’ll enjoy this one a lot more and if he finds a good rhythm, he’s overpriced.
