Downtown business owners say safety remains a concern in Kissimmee

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Downtown Business Owners on Kissimee’s Main Street continue to be vocal about safety after two shootings took place earlier this year.

What You Need To Know

  • Kissimmee Main Street is rolling out a safety survey to business owners
  • Some owners say they are concerned with the “nightlife atmosphere” in the area
  • Kissimmee Police Department had public workshop discussing crime stats

Concerns led the Kissimmee Police Department to lead a safety workshop earlier this month to discuss statistics and safety efforts.

Along with the workshop, Kissimmee Main Street has an active survey out asking business owners what they think needs to change to make the area safer.

Jackie Espinosa, owner of Matador Tacos and Tapas, says adapting to the growth and the people coming in is just something the whole area needs to do.

“Perhaps, in a situation like the ones we’ve seen recently, it’s increasing security and working closely with the Kissimmee Police Department,” she said. “Understanding it’s not going to take just the government — it’s also going to take private citizens and business owners to make it a prosperous and inviting downtown.”

Matador is located right in the middle of Main Street on Monument Avenue and Broadway, and Espinosa says she’s seen the change in nightlife from both sides.

“You have KPD right here at the end, with the City Hall, and then towards Dakin, you see the atmosphere change,” she said. “We’ll find solutions, and if we have to hire security, I hire security for private events absolutely as necessary.”

Officials with the Kissimmee Police Department say at any given time in the late night hours, four to seven officers patrol the area.

That is something Espinosa is grateful for, but said she would like to see more on busy nights like Friday and Saturday.

She hopes the ongoing safety survey will allow her to voice those concerns.

“It’s really a good way of just hearing the voice of the people, so the survey is definitely going in the right direction,” she said. “If we understand that it’s safety before profit and if we’re all responsible adults and business owners we can get through this.”
