After much-hyped billboard goes up in Tarentum, longtime business seeks approval to raise one

The Billboard wars might be heating up again in Tarentum.

On the heels of a yearslong legal battle from Oliver Outdoor and the eventual erection of an electronic billboard on Fourth Avenue,
another company is seeking to raise a billboard in town.

Weleski Transfer, a longtime moving company with offices along West Fourth Avenue, wants to install a digital billboard on its property.

The request has been denied by the borough, but an appeal will be heard at 6 p.m. Monday during a public hearing by the zoning board.

Code enforcement officer Anthony Bruni said the proposal was denied on two counts. The first is that only static billboards are permitted in the requested zoning district.

“They also want to have a billboard that is larger than the allowable square footage in West Tarentum,” Bruni said.

Weleski Transfer is requesting a special exception to the billboard ordinance. Gary Weleski declined to comment on the hearing.

“We have a good working relationship with Tarentum,” he said. “I’d like to see how the meeting goes.”

The company is seeking to install a billboard that is 14 by
48 feet, the same size as the one recently erected above the Tarentum Bridge.

It is unclear whether the billboard would be used only to advertise
Weleski’s services or would be rented for other ads.

Tarentum is fresh off a four-year legal battle that ended in a loss against America First Enterprises, which does business as Oliver Outdoor. In July, a two-sided electronic billboard was raised about 90 feet above Fourth Avenue, adjacent to the Tarentum Bridge.

Tarentum officials in 2019 declined to give the company a permit for the sign, with the rationale being the land where the pole would be placed is zoned in a district where billboards are prohibited.

Appeals were heard in courts up to the state Commonwealth Court, which ruled against the borough.
