Women’s Basketball Announces Staff Promotions and Additions – Drexel University Athletics

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women’s basketball team announced several changes to its coaching staff on Monday as current staff members will take on new responsibilities and the Dragons welcomed a familiar face back to the family.

Kayla Bacon has been elevated to assistant coach. Tessa Brugler will be the Director of Basketball Operations/Scouting. Joining the staff is the 2021 Dean Ehlers Award winner Hannah Nihill as the Coordinator of Strategic and Player Development.

Additionally, current assistant coach, Belle Koclanes, takes on the role of recruiting coordinator.

“We are very excited to continue to see our alumnae progress in our program,” said Janet E. and Bary C. Burkholder Family women’s basketball head coach Amy Mallon. “All three have been through the program, know what it takes to win at Drexel and will continue to help impact the program at a high level. Kayla and Tessa have proven themselves in their roles during the past season and are both very worthy of increased responsibilities. Hannah brings an understanding and appreciation for our program that few have and I’m excited to see her take the next step in her career.”

Bacon is a former captain and appeared in 101 games for the Dragons from 2018-21. She scored in double figures three times as a senior and was a key member of the Dragons’ run to the 2021 CAA Championship, averaging better than 27 minutes per game during the tournament. Bacon was also a founding member of the Black Student-Athlete Union and has been recognized by the Colonial Athletic Association for her efforts in promoting diversity and inclusion. She spent last season as the Coordinator of Strategic and Player Development.

Brugler worked the 2022-23 season as the team’s Director of Basketball Operations where she oversaw the logistics of practices, scheduling, and travel. As a graduate transfer in 2021-22, Brugler made an immediate impact on Drexel in her one year on the court. She averaged 13.9 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, the highest rebounding average for DU in 20 years as she earned Second Team All-Conference and CAA All-Tournament Team honors. She also posted 13 double-doubles and had 48 blocks for a Dragons’ squad that tied a program record with 28 wins and advanced to the Third Round of the WNIT.

Nihill set the CAA record for career games played with 153 and was honored eight times on All-Conference teams or with major awards. She is one of two players in Drexel history to record more than 1,000 points, 500 assists and 300 steals. She is second all-time in program history with 313 swipes and is third with 523 helpers. She was a part of three CAA regular season championships and was on teams that appeared in the postseason five times.
