Warriors’ Steph Curry named finalist for NBA’s Social Justice Champion award

Stephen Curry’s season won’t end with championship hardware. But he could still take home one of the NBA’s top awards.

Curry was named as one of the five finalists for the 2022-23 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion Award on Monday, an award honoring players who make strides in the fight for social justice.

Curry was joined by Suns guard Chris Paul, Grizzlies forward Jaren Jackson Jr., Spurs guard Tre Jones and Celtics forward Grant Williams as finalists for the award, which was created in 2021. The winner will be announced sometime during the NBA’s conference finals, though the exact date and time weren’t announced.

Curry’s off-court work has been well known for several years, and that now includes being a part of President Joe Biden’s fitness and nutrition council along with his wife Ayesha. During the Warriors’ visit to the White House in January to celebrate their championship, Curry thanked Biden for bringing Brittney Griner home from her 10-month incarceration in Russia and engaged directly with the president on policy matters.

The superstar has used his voice to advocate for people to vote in elections, including as a co-chair of Michelle Obama’s When We All Vote initiative, and for gun safety. His family is also behind the Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation, which fights to end childhood hunger.

An avid golfer, Curry has also donated millions to help Howard University in Washington D.C. re-start its men’s and women’s golf programs and is a major funder of the Underrated Junior Golf circuit to help increase golf participation in diverse communities. He’s worked with local community groups throughout the Bay Area, including this year when he hosted members of Black Cultural Zone, a nonprofit that focuses on building power, securing land and direct dollars to the East Oakland community, at a game.

Each team nominates a player for the award before a panel of NBA legends, including Abdul-Jabbar, league executives and social justice leaders determine the five finalists and one winner.

The winner of the award will receive a $100,000 donation from the NBA to give to a social justice organization of the winner’s choosing. The other finalists will each get to choose an organization to receive a $25,000 donation on their behalf.

The previous winners were Carmelo Anthony in 2021 and Reggie Bullock in 2022. Juan Toscano-Anderson was a finalist for the award when he was a member of the Warriors in 2021.
