Lake Norman head football coach Jonathan Oliphant previews the 2023 season at spring ball

Lake Norman High School head football Coach Jonathan Oliphant spoke with HighSchoolOT at the Wildcats’ first spring ball practice about the state of the team heading into the fall 2023 season.

All right, coach Lake Norman high school head coach, first day of spring ball today on the 18th. Um, what’s your first impression of the first day here? You know, first day, um, just to get back into it, man. Um, getting out here beautiful weather, um, putting on some helmets and running around and, and, and just talking ball and getting after it. Um, you know, got some things obviously to work on, but for day one, I thought it was pretty good. Um, great numbers. Um, you know, just excited to see what, what Thursday holds in store for these guys. So, um, good winning season last year. Really good J V team. A lot of guys coming back in general, I think a majority of the stars are coming back. Um What, what, what from this group last year? Um Are you really looking forward to seeing kind of develop coming into the season? Well, you know, we’ve, we’ve got a, a football weight training class, um, during the day and, you know, we’ve seen them coming together and, you know, um, that’s something that we’ve got to hang our hat on here is, is our culture um, and our kids loving each other and I feel like they’re doing a good job of getting closer together. Um, we’re going to F C A seven on seven camp at Gardner Webb this summer. And so I hope that that will continue to progress and, and just looking forward to the season, man, it, it’s fun to be out here. Um, we’ve all missed it and so it’s just fun to be back. Um, Ethan Calloway big tackle, uh, four star prospect, um, from your eyes. I know you identified it at a pretty early time. Um, what makes him special? And what makes him that power five prospect that he is. God just doesn’t make many humans. His size 67 £300 size 17 shoe big big hole to play for a college coach to play with and he hadn’t played very long. Um, so he’s very raw and I feel like his potentials, um, through the roof. I think that’s why he’s gotten so much attention. Um, but, you know, we’ve told him and he’s got to get better, you know, right now. Um, he’s not ready to play at those places and that’s fine. There’s not many high school kids ready to play at the places that are interested in him. Um, but our job is to get him as close as possible. And so he’s doing a really good job in the weight room. And so we’re really expecting big things out of him and then, you know, want him to play like that four star. Um We, he still got a little bit to go. But how have you seen him grow so far out there? Technically, he was, um, you know, it’s getting more physical, um realizing how big he is and that if he wants to put you in the ground, he can, um, he’s done a great job in the weight room, um really has changed his body from the, the 14 year old that came across the street from Lake Shore as a freshman. Um So, you know, just excited for him and excited for the rest of these guys to just, just get this thing going. Um So the skill guys back and we had a freshman right back on varsity. Uh Moses, uh tell me about the skill guys and how excited you are for them. You know, we’ve got a lot of skill guys back and, you know, Moses being one of them, but we’ve got a lot of seniors back uh Cam Neil on offense, Andrew Tlou, um Antonio Griffin, um Tracy Crist Moses and then even some young guys like Joey Limbo that, that are gonna get a chance to contribute on Friday nights and, you know, we’re just excited about those guys and so now we just got to get everything coming together and get everybody moving in the right direction. So, uh fun conference here you guys are in uh the, uh, greater, greater metro, uh, four A here. Um You have the cross county crosstown rival, more a lot of other really good programs too. What are you seeing out of the whole group so far, man? You know, this conference when we moved to it, it’s one of those conferences where you can win every game and you could lose every game. Um, because typically, you know, the competition’s there week in and week out. And so, um, you got to bring your best stuff and then, um, you know, hopefully we can build upon the 74 record we had last year and pick up a few wins and, you know, just move this thing in the right direction. All right, coach, appreciate the time, best luck this season. Appreciate it, brother.
