Girls’ district wrestling results. History made for University School girls’ soccer and more

The Mater Lakes Academy girls’ wrestling team placed third in the District 15 Tournament with all six wrestlers advancing to regionals.

They are 110-pounds Sofia Ferran (two-time District Champ); Janice Quiroa (135 District Champ); Aly Rik (145 District Champ); Angie Vaquer (District runner-up); Jasmine Blanco (130 District runner-up); and Arianna Ruiz (120 third at District).

Norland won the team title with district champs Mytysa Wright (100), Cheyenne Stingley (115) and Day’jah Clark (190). South Broward was second with district champs Nicole Arroyo (105) and Gaia Brown (235).

Also winning district titles were: Rachel Silva (120) of Somerset Academy; Na’Shae Garnett (125) of Dr. Krop; Nayeli Chinique (130) of Dr. Krop; London Yelder (140) of Everglades; Vanessa Alexandre (155) of Coral Springs; Tala Salao (170) of Archbishop McCarthy.

Regionals are Saturday at Wellington.

District 15: Team results: 1. Norland 150; 2. South Broward 121; 3. Mater Lakes Academy 118; 4. Archbishop McCarthy 52; 5. Dr. Krop 48; 6. Western 36; 7. Coral Springs 35; 8. Coconut Creek 30; 9. Everglades and Somerset Academy-Pembroke Pines 23; 11. Nova 19; 12. Dillard 12; 13. Taravella 9; 14. West Broward 7.

The North Miami Senior girls’ wrestling team was runner-up at the District 16 Tournament.

The Pioneers had four individual champions. They are: I-Cart Galumette (110 pounds); Isis Severe (120), Mya Bethel (155) and Wenchelle Jacotin (170). Also placing for North Miami were: Shayana Stcyr (third at 130); Hephlie Joseph (fourth at 100); Joveline Joseph (fourth at 145); Lesane Hied (fifth at 140); Chrystelle Joseph (sixth at 125).

In its first year, Mater Academy was third with eight medalists.

Regionals are next at Bayside High School in Palm Bay.

District 16: Team results: 1. South Dade 123; 2. North Miami 102.5; 3. Mater Academy 74.5; 4. Ferguson 73; 5. Key West 51.5; 6. Coral Park 44; 7. Doral Academy 36; 8. Miami Beach 31; 9. Florida Christian School 21.5; 10. Coral Reef 16.5; 11. Braddock and Palmetto 16; 13. Coral Gables 13; 14. Jackson 8.

Soccer playoffs

The University School girls’ soccer team (14-3-3) continued its breakout season with two more firsts.

In the Region 4-3A Championship, University School beat Westminster Christian 3-1 to win its first region title in girls’ soccer and advance to its first state semifinal.

Mia Herrera, Bianca Raskin and Giana Sanchez each scored. Taylor Smith had two assists, and Sadie Zelnick added one. Keeper Avril Ramirez made nine saves to ensure victory.

The champs are Rayna Silver, Avril Ramirez, Avery Teifeld, Taylor Smith, Simmy Mangan, Sofia Teifeld, Maya Berkman, Jada Graham, Giana Sanchez, Sophia Furman, Mckenna Wickman, Annie Levine, Sarah Jimenez, Mia Herrera, Bianca Raskin, Bianca Renteria, Alejandra Cardenas, Sadie Zelnick, Sian Kellier, Hayden Liberty, Mila Erb, Reese Sobol.

Head coach is Diego Estremedoyro. Assistant coaches Gabby Lindo and Michael Raskin.

University School had never won a regional playoff match before this season. Last season the Titans lost in the region quarterfinal to Westminster Christian, a team they beat on Tuesday in the region final.

University will travel to North Palm Beach to face Benjamin on Friday at 7 in a Class 3A state semifinal.

Benjamin beat University School 8-0 last season, but the Titans are a very different team this season and very young. The starting line-up consists of 8th, 9th and 10th graders.

Tennis

GIRLS: Gulliver Prep 7, Palmer Trinity 0: No.1 Sophia Varabyeva won 8-2; No.2 Valentina Rossi won 8-2; No.3 Mia Suarez won 8-3; No.4 Mika Ringel won 8-3; No.5 Maya Quintero won 8-2. GP (3-1).

GIRLS: Palmetto 7, Lourdes 0: No.1 Mia Sorrentino d. Mia Perez 8-3; No.2 Stephanie Hylton d. Madison Figueira 8-0; No.3 Brooke Revuelta d. Alexa Tapanes 8-0; No.4 Alessia Franco d.
