The Sweet Auburn location of Refuge Coffee closes Friday, September 23, after nearly three years in the historic Atlanta Daily World building on Auburn Avenue. In a press release, owners Kitti and Bill Murray say the decision to close was partially due to the financial fallout from the pandemic. This location opened just one month prior to the start of the pandemic, which shut down businesses, hotels, and Georgia State University nearby in downtown Atlanta for months.

“This difficult decision to leave a beloved place has come after much deliberation from Refuge Coffee leadership committed to choose hard things that maintain the health of the entire organization,” the press release reads in part.

Throughout the pandemic, Refuge continued to pay its employees and barista trainees. The nonprofit coffee shop provides support, job training, and job opportunities for Atlanta’s refugee community, a mission that began at its original location in Clarkston. However, it continues to partner as the coffee provider for co-working and events space Constellations in Sweet Auburn.

Refuge Coffee also includes a location in Midtown at Woodruff Arts Center. A third location opens later this year in downtown Norcross. [Official]

Tin Lizzy’s catches fire in Buckhead

The Piedmont Road location of Tin Lizzy’s caught fire early Tuesday morning. The blaze began outside, the AJC reports, and spread to the ceiling of the restaurant before it was eventually extinguished. Most of the damage is to the outside of the building, with damage inside the restaurant caused by efforts to put the fire out. It’s unclear how the fire began or what caused the blaze. Three Arches Mediterranean restaurant replaces Mount Royal in Buckhead

Mediterranean restaurant Three Arches recently replaced Mount Royal at the Hyatt Centric hotel in Buckhead. Earlier this year, chef Hugh Acheson closed his Montreal-style steakhouse, departing the restaurant after just four months. A source with knowledge of the situation indicated the decision to part ways with the hotel came down to “creative differences” between Acheson and hotel management.

As for Three Arches, expect a menu from chef Josh Hopkins to include dishes and flavors from around the Mediterranean region, like grilled trout with pistachio pesto and preserved lemon and Moroccan meatballs with mint yogurt, cabbage, and pickled onions. [Official]

Red Sky Tapas Closes in Marietta

Red Sky Tapas closed September 15 after 14 years in Marietta. No reason for the decision to close was provided in the Facebook post.

Austin-based Hopdoddy Burger Bar is opening on Briarcliff

After acquiring Grub Burger earlier this year, Austin-based burger chain Hopdoddy Burger Bar is preparing to open its first location in Atlanta this fall. Opening October 4, Hopdoddy Burger Bar takes over the Grub Burger on Briarcliff Road, which closes September 24 for a quick renovation. Additional Hopdoddy locations to open in metro Atlanta next year.

Billed as an eco-friendly, craft burger restaurant using humanely and sustainably raised beef and chicken, Hopdoddy features a menu of classic double stacks with cheese and more elaborate burgers like the Birria topped with chorizo and a Oaxaca cheese quesadilla. The menu also includes a bison burger as well as chicken, mushroom, and vegan burgers, along with a handful of fry options like nacho, parmesan truffle, and green chile queso.
