Westquay set to open on day of Queen’s funeral – but many stores will be closed

SOUTHAMPTON’S biggest shopping centre will be open throughout the Queen’s funeral – but many of the individual stores will either be Closed or remain shut until after the service.

Westquay will be open from 9am until 6pm on Monday.

But the centre says the following stores will be closed: 3, Accessorize, Apple, Auntie Anne’s, The Body Shop, Casa Brasil, Clinton’s, Dune, EE, Essentials, Eurochange, Fat Face, Flying Tiger, Footlocker, Goldsmiths, H Samuel, H&M, Hollister, Hotel Chocolat, Hugo Boss, John Lewis & Partners, Joules, Laings, Laser Clinic, LEGO, LUSH, Marks & Spencer, Montezuma’s, Next, O2, Oliver Bonas, Pandora, Paperchase, Phase Eight, Pizza Express, Russel & Bromley, Schuh, Smiggle, Showcase Cinema de Lux, Skechers, Sky, Swarovski, Tag Heuer, The Perfume Shop, Tommy Hilfiger, Typo, Vuse, Waterstones, Yankee Candle.

In addition, Wagamama will not open until 1pm and Zizzi will remain closed until 3pm.

Shoppers planning to visit Westquay are being advised to contact individual stores before travelling to the centre.

A Westquay spokesperson said: “The centre will be open on Monday and will be operating Bank Holiday hours.

“Some stores have chosen to close and we are continually updating our website to reflect this. However, we also have some essential retailers who plan to open as there are customers who rely on this service.”

The Queen’s funeral, expected to be attended by 2,000 guests, will take place at Westminster Abbey at 11am.

Following the service, at about 12.15pm, the Queen’s coffin will travel from the abbey to Wellington Arch, at London’s Hyde Park Corner.

It will then be transferred to the new State Hearse for its final journey to Windsor Castle.

Westquay shopping centre will be open on Monday but many of the stores will be closed.

Nationally it is down to individual retailers whether they open or not.

Major supermarkets chains such as Sainsbury’s, M&S, Asda, Tesco, Waitrose and Morrisons are set to shut Their branches on Monday.

Asda stores will be closed until 5pm on the day to allow staff and customers to watch TV coverage of the funeral.

Asda has also decided not to offer online deliveries on the day.

Large Tesco supermarkets will close all day and smaller Tesco Express stores will shut until 5pm. Tesco convenience stores and petrol stations will open 5pm to 10pm.

Sainsbury’s will close all its supermarkets and Argos stores on the day of the funeral as well as pausing its online shopping options.

Smaller Sainsbury’s and its petrol forecourts will open from 5pm to 10pm.

A spokesperson for the John Lewis Partnership, which runs Waitrose and John Lewis, said both brands would shut their doors for the day.

M&S has said it will also close its stores and halt deliveries to customers on Monday.

Lidl will be shutting its shops across the UK and Co-op branches will close until 5pm.
