Travelers State Availability

Travelers has approximately 13,500 independent agents and brokers in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Ireland. Travelers offers Renters Insurance in 45 states and Washington, D.C. Travelers doesn’t sell renters insurance in Alaska, Florida, Louisiana, West Virginia or Hawaii.

Cost of Travelers Renters Insurance

The national average rate for Travelers Renters Insurance is between $14 and $21 per month, which is consistent with many other renters insurance companies.

However, insurance rates vary by state and individual risks. Customers can reduce their premiums by bundling their renters insurance and car insurance or by qualifying for other discounts.

Factors that influence the cost of renters insurance include:

  • Location. If you live in an area with high crime or more frequent natural disasters, you will typically pay higher rates for insurance coverage.
  • Age and construction. Older homes may have outdated systems that are more likely to cause a loss. Homes made of materials that are easier to damage or that are in poor condition have a higher risk of severe losses. Expect to pay higher rates when the home you rent is older or constructed with low-grade materials.
  • Coverage limits and add-ons. If you need coverage beyond what an insurance company offers in its standard package, your premium will go up.
  • Deductible. If you select a higher deductible for your renters insurance policy, your premiums will be lower because the insurance company pays less for each claim you submit.
  • Individual risks. Risks unique to you, such as your age, claims history, pets, habits, credit score, and other factors may influence the cost of your insurance.

Cost of Travelers Renters Insurance by State

Travelers Discounts

You can reduce the cost of your renters insurance premiums by qualifying for one or more insurance discounts. For example, you can save up to 5% by bundling renters insurance coverage with your auto insurance policy. Discount availability varies by state. More discounts include:

  • Multiple policies
  • Security systems
  • Fire protective devices
  • Smart home technologies
  • Loss-free history
  • Good payer

To determine the exact amount you can save, request a quote from an independent agent or online.

Some discounts, such as the on-time payment or multi-policy discount, apply automatically once you qualify for them. Discounts, such as the protective device discount, may require proof that you qualify, such as an invoice showing you installed a home security system or smoke detectors or that your rental has a sprinkler system.

On the sample quote we requested, we received a $173 off on annual premiums for loss-free history, a good payer and fire protective discounts.

Travelers Policy Coverage

Standard coverage on a Travelers renters insurance policy provides the following types of coverage:

  • Personal property coverage: Personal property coverage can replace or repair valuable items that you own if a covered cause of loss, such as vandalism, damages or destroys them. Most Travelers renters policies settle personal property claims at actual cash value, which is the replacement cost of the property less a deduction for depreciation.
  • Housing improvements: A standard Travelers renters insurance policy will cover up to 10% of a renter’s personal property coverage to repair or replace improvements that a renter either made or paid for and were subsequently damaged.
  • Personal liability: If you’re sued for an injury that happened in your rental, personal liability coverage helps cover legal fees and damages. The standard policy provides $100,000 in personal liability coverage.
  • Medical payments to others: If someone gets hurt on your property, medical payments to others coverage pays for their necessary medical bills. The standard coverage amount is $1,000.

Additional Coverage

Customize your policy with this optional coverage:

  • Contents replacement cost: This upgraded coverage changes the way Travelers pays for personal property losses. With replacement cost coverage, it pays for the cost of your covered item without any deduction for depreciation. Special limits apply to special items like jewelry and silverware.
  • Valuable items insurance: Standard personal property coverage has limits for certain items like valuables. This rider covers special property like jewelry, art, musical instruments and computers for an extended variety of losses. You can also increase your coverage limits for personal property to cover these items. No appraisal or listing of insured items is necessary.

Travelers Renters Insurance Reviews

Travelers relies on a network of independent agents, so the quality of the customer service you receive may vary by location. Travelers has an A rating from the Better Business Bureau, which means it does an acceptable job at responding to customer complaints. Still, its customer satisfaction rating is concerningly low, at 1.03 out of 5.00 at the time of this writing.

Trustpilot reviewers rate Travelers slightly higher at 2.4 out of 5.0 stars based on limited reviews. Most of the published reviews are for Travelers auto insurance, Travelers home insurance and other Travelers insurance products.

Customer complaints include claims that representatives provided incorrect information about coverage, poor communication, unfair cancellation policies and unsatisfactory claims service.

Travelers has decided to cancel our insurance, because of the dog that we have. There have been no incidents with the dog and we have filed no claims in the year we have had them as our insurance carrier.” —Brandon U. via BBB

This company is a complete joke! I lost everything due to water damage and this renters insurance has yet to call me back, let alone pay for any of my losses! Dealing with Jesse from Travelers has been nothing but a waste of my time! It’s currently August. I’ve been waiting since May!” —Patricia S. via BBB

The Bottom Line

Travelers is a large, stable insurance company with solid financial strength that receives few insurance department complaints from customers. Travelers’ renters insurance policies are highly customizable with unique coverage options, such as decreasing deductibles, and valuable discounts, such as bundling renters insurance with Travelers car insurance. However, despite the company’s low complaint rate, online reviews from customers are largely negative, focusing on poor communication, slow service, misinformation and billing issues.

Because Travelers relies on independent agents, it may be wise to investigate reviews of your local Travelers insurance agent before deciding to purchase a policy. If Travelers doesn’t seem like the best option for you, consider obtaining insurance quotes from our top renters insurance providers.

We recommend Lemonade for college students and Allstate for seniors. State Farm offers affordable premiums and American Family provides excellent customer service. GEICO is one of our top picks for easy policy management.
