One factor causes more car, truck and motorcycles crashes than any other: Human behavior.

Specifically, the top three causes of fatal automobile accidents are driving under the influence, speeding, and failing to use a seatbelt, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Researchers at Insurify recently added another layer of insight to understanding driver behavior: Vehicle choice. Insurify turned to the data it holds from 4.6 million car insurance applications to link dangerous driving behavior to specific automobiles. They discovered five car and truck brands that were statistically linked to the most at-fault accidents, based on Insurify data. The slideshow above illustrates those vehicles.

Here are some additional insights from Insurify’s look at car brands linked to the most at-fault accidents:

  • In 2022, an average of 9.25% of drivers across the U.S. have at least one at-fault accident on record.
  • There is a strong correlation between accident- and speed-prone brands.
  • Volvo drivers cause the fewest accidents.
