5 Structural Types In A Multi-Storey Building

The main difference between a single-storey building and a multi-storey building is the number of levels a building has. A multi-storey building has to take into account the many different types of walkways, paths, stairs, ramps and lifts, all cramped into one single, multi-storey Structure. The foundation of a multi-storey building consists of a basement, a ground level and multipole other levels, depending on how high the building is. A multi-storey building also can have a separated compartment on its side, in between each level. Here, we will take a look on the different kinds of structural types a multi-storey building has.

What are Structural Types in a Multi-Storey Building?

Structural types, as the name suggest, are the different kind of structures used to build a multi-storey building. Each structure type has its advantages, depending on the location, cost, and the type of design. Pre-planning is important as the construction of a multi-storey building will have many obstacles.

Each multi-storey building is unique so having different structural types can be useful, without compromising safety. The height of the multi-storey building also plays a huge part in the types of structures that can be used. Below are 8 different structural types that property developers and construction companies used in today’s construction of multi-storey building.

  • Framed Structure: this consists of a network of beams and columns, all connecting to form a frame or the skeleton of the multi-storey building. This structure will bear the load of the foundation of the building.
  • Cantilever Structure: this consists of an internal core, which floors and beams cantilever. By using this structure, it eliminates the use for columns in a multi-storey building.
  • Propped Structure: this structure an internal core as well, similar to the cantilever structure but the main difference is that it is used as the seating for columns. A platform or a cantilever slab is used for this.
  • Suspended Structure: this structure consists of horizontal floors that will support the steel cables, which is hung from the cross beams located at the top or roof.
  • Shear Wall Structure: this structure ius useful to counter wind or lateral pressures. It consists of panels, which are braced so that wind or lateral pressures will be transferred to the wall itself.
  • Hull Structure: this structure holds the mechanical part of the multi-storey building such as lifts and utilities. It consists of a core tube, both inner and outer. Those tubes interact with each other as main components of a wall-frame structure.
  • Core Structure: similar to the advantages of the shear wall structure, core structure can counter wind pressure by transmitting the pressure to the wall.
  • Braced Structure: by using this structure, it provides stability in the columns. While the beams and columns framing bear any vertical loads, the braced structure will hold the lateral loads. It minimizes the lateral displacement and is also reduces bending in columns.
