Popular television actress Devoleena Bhattacharjee tied the knot with boyfriend Shahnawaz Sheikh in an intimate ceremony on December 14. Shahnawaz also happens to be Devoleena's gym trainer.

The Wedding was a close-knit affair in Lonavala with only their closest friends and family members in attendance.

In an interview with Pinkvilla, Devoleena revealed why she ditched a lavish wedding and opted for a simple celebration.

She said, "During my teenage years, I always counted and eyed for a royal wedding. But during the Covid-19 lockdown, I understood many different aspects of life and the importance of money. I feel there comes a point to break the trend and to make society understand that only making your D-day big doesn't make you royal. I feel instead of wasting that huge sum of hard-earned money, using them for helping people in need and taking their blessings for a happy life is worth and pure. I don't believe that flaunting a royal lifestyle will help me."

On Sunday, Devoleena shared a video and gave a glimpse of her court marriage with Shahnawaz. The actress also penned a heartfelt note for her husband.

In an interview with Bombay Times, Devoleena said, "The decision to get married was sudden. We had a court marriage, which was followed by a get-together at a resort in Lonavala in the evening. His family hosted a reception for us a day later.”

She also revealed that she will host a reception for her industry colleagues in Mumbai next month.

While her wedding took the entire nation by surprise, along with congratulatory messages, Devoleena was also targetted for her inter-faith marriage with several netizens calling it 'love jihad'.

Devoleena also took a stand for herself as well as her husband as she replied to a slew of trolls on her social media handle.

In a now-deleted tweet, a user asked her if she will raise her children as Hindu or Muslim, to which Devoleena responded, "Whether my babies will be hindu or muslims aap kaun ? Aur itni jab apko baccho ko lekar chinta ho hi rahi hai bohot saare anaath ashrams hai, jaaiye adopt kijiye aur apne hisaab se dharm or naam decide kijiye. Mera pati, mera baccha , mera dharm , mere rules. Aap kaun ? #toxic"

She went on to say, "Woh mere aur mere pati par chor dijiye. Hum dekh lenge. Aur dusro k dharam pe google search karne k wajai apne dharam par focus kijiye aur acche insaan baniye. Itna toh mujhe yakeen hai aap jaiso se gyaan lene ki mujhe katai zaroorat nahi hai."

Meanwhile, Devoleena had managed to keep her relationship with Shahnawaz under wraps for close to three years. On Wednesday, she took her fans by surprise after she posted pictures with her husband from their wedding ceremony.

On the work front, Devoleena shot to fame with her role of the docile Gopi Bahu in the hit daily soap 'Saath Nibhaana Saathiya'. She also essayed a special role in the reboot of the show.

Besides, Devoleena has also appeared in other shows like 'Laal Ishq' and has participated in two seasons of 'Bigg Boss'. She was last seen in the short film, First Second Chance.
