4 held with cough syrup worth Rs 1.42 lakh in Palghar

Four persons were arrested allegedly with cough syrup worth Rs 1.42 lakh in Palghar in Maharashtra, a police official said on Thursday.

They were held from Dapchari check post on Tuesday night after a tempo carrying several boxes was spotted, Inspector Ajay Vasave of Talasari police station said.

"We seized cough syrup worth Rs 1.42 lakh. The four were arrested after they could not give satisfactory answers on the consignment. They have been charged under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act," Vasave said.

6 held in Thane; 11 HBT cases solved, say cops

Six persons were arrested in Thane district for their alleged involvement in 11 house-breaking theft cases, a police official said on Thursday.

These cases took place in the limits of Rabodi and Naupada police stations, Assistant Commissioner of Police Sonali Dhole said.

"We have recovered looted items, comprising three autorickshaws, two motorcycle, two mobile phones and 50 grams of gold, worth Rs 6.65 lakh. They usually struck houses that were not covered by CCTV systems in the vicinity," she said.

She identified the accused as Kashif Anwar Mulla, Shabbir Kasam Ali Shaikh, Mustaque Yunus Qureshi, Shaukat Mehbood Shaikh, Manda Sarjerao Madale and Sriram Triveti Singh.

"The 11 cases comprise 10 in Rabodi and one in Naupada. One of the accused was wanted in an attempt to murder case," she added.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday asked authorities in several districts of the state to be ready with rescue teams and relief mechanisms in view of the India Meteorological Department predicting rain squalls.

These are sudden, intense bouts of rain with gusts of wind for a few minutes.

A statement from the chief minister's office (CMO) said officials in districts in the Konkan, western Maharashtra, north Maharashtra and Vidarbha have been directed to be on full alert for such weather activities.

The IMD has predicted that some parts of the state may get such rain squalls for the next four to five days, officials said.

The citizens group 'Mumbai March' held a silent protest this morning at Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) against the decision of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to allow the immersion of Ganesh idol in the Dahisar river inside the park on the tenth day of the festival on September 9.

The protest was held at 7 am by the group that has been working to push for the rejuvenation of Mumbai’s rivers.

The immersion inside SGNP was stopped in 2018 and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) constructed permanent artificial immersion ponds outside the national park in its car parking lot.

The annual Ganeshotsav festival with end with immersion of Ganpati idols on Friday, September 9. The authorities have expected an increased footfall since the festival is being celebrated without restrictions after two years.

The barricades from areas--Santoshi Mata Mandir, Airoli end of Airoli Bridge, near Chhedanagar Flyover, and Kerosene Jetty--have been removed.

For smooth Ganesh processions, BMC fills 2,000 potholes in 10 days

To facilitate smooth sail of Ganesh processions, the BMC has filled 2,000 potholes, which comes to an average of filling 200 everyday, in the past ten days. The civic body said that it's continuously patching potholes on warfooting as the city gears to bid final farewell to Lord Ganesh on Friday.

The highest number of potholes were reported from Andheri, Ghatkopar, Jogeshwari, Goregaon and Malad areas, said civic sources. Currently, the potholes are filled by rapid hardening concrete, which dries up in six hours.

“The dry spell for the last few days gave us some time to fill the potholes. Our team is inspecting the immersion route and filling craters as they are spotted. The material we are using now dries up fast, so we can open the road for traffic within a day. We will try our best to keep the roads pothole-free for a smooth ride for Ganesh idols,” said the civic official.

Lauding the civic body for the speedy road works, the sarvajanik or public Ganesh mandals also expressed concern that the filled potholes may open up due to heavy showers.

Road transport minister Nitin Gadkari has said that the government, by the end of 2022, expects carmakers to mandatorily provide at least six airbags in eight-seater vehicles for enhanced safety of occupants.

An airbag is a vehicle occupant-restraint system which activates between the driver and the vehicle’s dashboard during a collision, thereby preventing serious injuries.

The push for the key safety feature comes after the death of Cyrus Mistry in a road accident on Sunday. The tragedy has renewed concerns about road safety in the world’s fourth-largest automobile market.

BMC to compile ward-wise centralised data for project-affected people

The BMC allots alternate accommodation to project-affected people (PAP) in various infrastructure projects like roads and nullah widening and others.

To bring transparency in the allotments to PAPs, the BMC has now decided to compile ward-wise centralised data which will be available on one click. This will enable the civic body to plan and undertake projects for the PAPs as per the actual requirement of the ward, said a civic official.

There are various bottlenecks in the alignment of existing roads leading to traffic congestion. Moreover, the encroachment alongside the nallah delays the project of widening.

For many projects, the greatest challenge is PAP, who are unwilling to hand over their land and move. This leads to delay projects as PAPs often dispute the accommodation offered to them.

Last year, the BMC decided to increase the maximum cap of financial compensation from Rs 30 lakh to Rs 50 lakh for commercial and residential affected due to various infrastructure projects.

Anticipating heavy rush at Charni Road station on the last day of Ganesh immersion, the Western Railway has decided to give halts to all Churchgate-bound fast local services at all stations between Mumbai Central and Churchgate on Friday.

“All fast locals, which run during the peak period from 5 pm to 8.30 pm on September 9 towards Churchgate, will be provided halts at all stations between Mumbai Central and Churchgate, including Charni Road,” said the WR official.

IMD issues yellow alert in Mumbai, Thane, Pune and several other districts for next 5 days

Mumbai witnessed heavy showers along with thunder and lightning on Wednesday evening hinting toward the development of a new monsoonal system over the city which is likely to intensify over the weekend. According to the Indian Metrological Department (IMD), a new system has been developed which will result in rainfall over the entire state, including the Konkan belt and parts of Goa.

The IMD has given Mumbai a yellow alert from today (Thursday). “A yellow alert means heavy rains along with intense spells at isolated places,” said IMD Colaba official Sushma Nair.

“The thunderstorm activities which we are experiencing currently will decrease and a new monsoon system is getting formed which will increase the intensity of the rainfall over the state including Mumbai,” added the official.

Other districts which also have been given yellow alerts by the IMD include Palghar, Thane, Sindhudurg, Nasik, Ahmednagar, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, Jalna, Nanded and Latur. Moreover, Raigad and Ratnagiri have been given an orange alert for the weekend.
