Man strangles wife to death over petty dispute; held in Nallasopara

A 25-year-old man allegedly strangled his wife to death following an argument at their house in Nalla Sopara area of Maharashtra's Palghar district, police said on Monday.

The police arrested Bhavik Rameshbhai Thakkar for allegedly killing his wife Munni (23) on Sunday, the station house officer of Nalla Sopara police station said.

The couple used to have frequent quarrels and things took a turn for worse when the victim asked the accused for money and a heated argument ensued, he said.

The accused slapped the victim, pushed her and strangled her to death, he said.

The police were alerted and the body was sent to a government hospital for post-mortem, the official added.

Two employees of CA firm held for stealing Rs 13 lakh in Mulund

A debt-ridden man working with a chartered accountant has been arrested along with a colleague for allegedly stealing Rs 13 lakh from his employer in Mulund in Mumbai, a police official said on Monday.

Mulund-resident Sumit Wadekar and Chetan Bhabhe from Dombivali in Thane district were held on Sunday and the looted amount has been recovered from them, he added.

"Wadekar was asked to collect Rs 13 lakh from a client in Ghatkopar by his employer on Saturday, which he did. However, close to office, the money was stolen by one person who tried to choke Wadekar with a handkerchief," the official said.

"The entire episode seemed suspicious. So we questioned Wadekar. He confessed that the theft was carried out by him along with Bhabhe, who had run away with the cash after trying to choke him," the official said.

Fourteen of these martyred soldiers hailed from Osmanabad and 10 from Latur, an official said.

12 per cent of Jan Dhan bank accounts in Maharashtra have zero balance: Official

Maharashtra has 3.16 crore bank accounts opened under the Jan Dhan scheme, but 12 per cent of them have zero balance and currently not operational, a senior banker said on Monday.

Banks need to reach out to these account holders and make them financially literate so that they are able to undertake regular transactions and keep the accounts active, he said after a State Level Bankers Committee (SLBC) meeting in Aurangabad in central Maharashtra.

Thieves loot Rs 10.55 lakh from sub-inspector's Jalna home

Thieves broke into the house of a police sub-inspector in Jalna on Monday morning and looted cash and ornaments cumulatively valued at Rs 10.55 lakh, an official said.

The theft took place in the house of PSI Madhukar Patil in Sharda Nagar in Ambad at 11:30am, he said.

"They took ornaments worth Rs 8.75 lakh and Rs 1.80 lakh cash. The PSI was on duty at the time. CCTV footage of the vicinity is being checked to nab the culprits," he added.

Dadar: Two arrested for stealing gold worth Rs 1.24 crore from jewellery store

Mumbai Police have nabbed two men for allegedly stealing gold ornaments worth Rs 1.24 crore from a jewellery store in central Mumbai, police said on Monday, according to the PTI.

According to an official, the culprit was apprehended on Saturday by the crime department of the Mumbai Police for the theft that happened on August 24 at a well-known jewellery store in the Dadar neighbourhood.

He revealed that unidentified individuals broke into the store on August 24 between 2 and 5 p.m. and fled with 2.4 kilogramme of gold jewellery valued Rs. 1.24 crore.

Maharashtra's Nashik district on Monday recorded 20 new cases of coronavirus that raised the tally of infections to 4,81,622, an official said.

The toll remained unchanged at 8,904, and the count of recoveries reached 4,72,547 after 33 patients recovered from the disease, he said.

The district is now left with 171 active cases, the official said.

The Bombay High Court on Monday sought suggestions from experts about means and methods that can be adopted to make Indian currency notes and coins more user friendly for visually impaired persons.

A division bench of Justices Prasanna Varale and Sharmila Deshmukh noted that while the court may keep passing orders, sometimes it too may be proceeding in the dark and hence, suggestions from experts will be required to come up with a solution.

Calling Cyrus Mistry her twin, NCP leader Supriya Sule on Monday said she has been devastated by the demise of the former chairman of Tata Sons.

"My husband Sadanand and daughter Revati were scheduled to meet Cyrus and his wife in London on September 12 but fate had other plans," Sule told PTI.

Recalling her friendship of almost three decades with Mistry, the Lok Sabha member said he always kept a low profile and loved Maharashtrian food.

"He was very simple and very, very humble. God's human being," she said.

Sule said, "We were like twins as we had a lot of common habits. We always talked on the phone while eating. This habit irked his wife Rohiqa who used to point out that it was rude to eat and talk at the same time." "Just going to Pune and eating simple food was what he liked. He was as comfortable in Matheran and Mahabaleshwar as he was in Switzerland and Paris," Sule said.

The NCP leader said Cyrus was very kind to his school friends. His school friends were his best friends, she added.

"He hated being photographed, flashlights and any sort of attention. He was always punctual and valued time and people. He had all the good qualities of leadership and management. He read a lot of books, was very respectful and soft-spoken," she said.

The Bombay High Court on Monday said the condition of toilets in schools across Maharashtra was very bad, and asked the state government if it was powerless or waiting for some auspicious day to frame a policy on the issue.

A division bench of Justices Prasanna Varale and Sharmila Deshmukh said it was "pained by the sorry state of affairs".

The court was hearing a petition filed by two law students Nikita Gore and Vaishnavi Gholave, raising concerns over the central and state governments not implementing effective menstrual hygiene management resulting in women, and particularly adolescent girls, facing problems.

The petition also pointed out the issue of unclean and unhygienic washrooms and toilets for girls in government aided schools.

Thane: Two injured after house ceiling plaster collapses

Two persons were injured after their house ceiling plaster fell on them in Maharashtra's Thane city on Monday, civic officials said.

The victims were sleeping in their apartment located in a ground-plus-four storey building in Budhaji Nagar when the ceiling plaster collapsed around 5 am, Thane Municipal Corporation's Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) chief Avinash Sawant said.

A 22-year-old man and a woman aged 27 suffered injuries. They have been admitted to the Kalwa civic hospital for treatment, the official said.

After 2 years of very low noise levels, the use of drums, conical loudspeakers, and banjos increased noise levels on the 5th day of Ganpati Visarjan (immersion).

The combination of drums and banjo created the highest noise level, 115.6dB at the Babulnath corner of Marine Drive and 112.1dB at Bandra.

Sumaira Abdulali, from Awaaz Foundation, said that the second highest noise was recorded when a metal cylinder was beaten by a metal hammer at 109.4dB at Linking Road and by drums when sound was reflected off metal barriers of the Metro construction at SV Road, Khira Nagar.

The prices of vegetable in the city is on the rise. Most vegetables, in retail, are being sold above Rs 80 per kg presently. Traders at the wholesale market say that the supply will increase only after winter sets in by October-November.

The price rise has been caused due to poor supply of vegetables in the city markets. The supply dipped due to excess rainfall in regions that supply vegetables to Mumbai.

According to traders at the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC), earlier vehicles were not arriving from many places due to water logging and the poor state of roads in deep villages. Now, the lack of availability of vegetables are causing the price rise.

Children from Lakshmi Narayan Housing Society, in Thane, on Sunday donated cricket and badminton kits to more than 100 kids from the slums of Janka Devi Nagar and Bhim Nagar, near Little Flower High School.

Kasber Augustine, president of Thane Citizen’s Forum (TCF), who planned the initiative, said slum children are deprived of play because of their economic status and lack of proper playgrounds.

“We tried our best to fulfill their wish. There is always a joy in giving to those who are not so fortunate,” he said.

Carnac bridge to be back with new look in 22 months

The British-era Carnac bridge located between CSMT and Masjid stations in south Mumbai will return with a new look in 2024. Dismantling and reconstruction work of this bridge will is likely to be completed in 22 months.

The height of the existing bridge (being dismantled) is 4.9 metre which will be replaced by 5.9 metre high bridge. Moreover, the new bridge will be nearly 9 metre wider than the existing bridge.

The width of the existing old bridge is 18.2 metre including both side pathways (foot path). The new bridge will be around 27 metre wide including both pathways.

Dismantling work is being carried out by the CR and reconstruction work will be carried out by BMC.

Light rainfall over city likely this week

Mumbaikars were in for a surprise when they woke up with heavy rains lashing the city on the weekend. Brace yourselves for more showers, albeit lighter than what the city saw over the weekend.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said there is a possibility of a new weather system over the week resulting in light to moderate rain spells over the city and suburbs.

IMD official Sushma Nair explained that rainfall that occurred over the weekend was due to thunderstorm activity but new developments show formation of climactic systems that induce rainfall.

"According to new developments, there is a possibility of new systems generating over the week which will most likely result in good rainfall over the west coast of Maharashtra, including the city and suburbs.”

According to Nair, this is because the IMD is expecting westerly winds to get stronger over the week which will result in rainfall.
