Netflix has recently announced that it will be raising its U.S. prices by 8% to 13%. This price increase doesn’t come as a surprise. With over 73 million subscribers, Netflix’s popularity skyrocketed this year as most of the country remained confined to their homes by government-sanctioned lockdowns and turned to Netflix to fill their day. But what are subscribers paying for? Here’s a look at their top 100 movies, starting with Netflix’s latest releases.

Back to the future

There is no denying that the first of the trilogy is by far the best among the bunch by bringing together the best elements of science fiction and action, with a healthy dose of witty comedy. Marty McFly accidentally travels back in time using the DeLorean time machine with limited time remaining, his aim is to make sure his future parents fall in love.

Being John Malkovich

This is an American fantasy comedy directed by Spike Jonze, starring Cameron Diaz, Catherine Keener and John Cusack. This put Spike Jonze on the movie map as a director, and landed the writer, Charlie Kaufman an Oscar Nomination.

Cape Fear

This is an intense psychological crime thriller directed by Martin Scrosese, it is a remake of a 1962 Film also called Cape Fear. Cape Fear revolves around the life of Max Cady, a convict who harasses and terrorizes the public defender he holds responsible for his incarceration.

Casino Royale

Due to the unexpected delays of the release of No Time To Die, Netflix decided to upload Casino Royale, one of the all-time favorite Bond movies starring Daniel Craig.  With realistic action sequences and magnified stakes for James Bond, Casino Royale took the craft of spy movies to an entirely new level.

The Devil All the Time

Adapted from a novel, this film looks at generational violence in the South from World War I to the Vietnam War. Sinister characters converge around a young man trying to raise his family in a post-war corruption-filled town. It is ominous, dark and perfect for crime movie lovers.

An Education

This coming-of-age drama is based on memoirs that go by the same name. Jenny, played by Carey Mulligan, is an above-average woman who becomes enchanted with a con artist named David, played by Peter Sargaard. Things don’t go as she’d hoped when she finds out David is not who he seemed to be.

Fargo

This brilliant story of violence and redemption set in the America North was written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. A Minnesotan cop gets mixed up with a car salesman with deep connections to the criminal underworld.

Her

This science fiction romantic drama is set around Theodore Twombly, played by Joaquin Phoenix. Theodore buys and falls in love with an artificial intelligence system named Samantha, voiced by Scarlett Johansson. It is witty, emotional and very relatable.

How to Train Your Dragon 2

This animation follows the story of Hiccup and Toothless as they face a dragon trapper focused on dominating all dragons. This family animation movie based on friendship, family and legacy is something for the whole family to watch.

Hunt for the Winderpeople

This comedy adventure is centered on the life of Ricky Baker in his new foster home, and with a lovely foster mom. However when Ricky’s foster mom passes away, he finds himself with his foster father on an expected adventure. It is truly funny and heartwarming.

I’m Thinking of Ending Things

This is one of the best films written and directed by Charlie Kaufman right now on Netflix. This dark story is about a woman who already has misgivings about her boyfriend, but regardless sets out on a trip with him to meet his parents on a remote farm. But nothing is as it seems.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest

Randle McMurphy, played by Jack Nicholson, is a new patient at a mental institution under the supervisor of a strict nurse, Nurse Ratched. This film is timeless in its portrayal of some of society’s key issues: individualism and Jack Nicholson’s most iconic performance.

The Muppets

The Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted are two of the Muppet on Netflix. This 2011 Muppets movie is an all-time family favorite. With characters like Kermit, Ms. Piggy and Fozzie Bear, the film is funny and brings to life the characters that defined Muppet Culture.

Nightcrawler

Nightcrawler is an epic thriller, starring Jake Gyllenhall, about a man who rises to fame by recording violence crimes that take place at night in the heart of Los Angeles. Focusing on how journalism intercepts with opportunism, this film gives viewers a look into the subcultures that come out at night in major cities.

Pineapple Express

Starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, this film is about an average man and his drug dealer who find themselves in the crosshairs of very bad people after they witnessed a murder. It is a funny, action-packed movie that never gets old.

Wildlife

Wildlife is a lyrical drama full of intrigue, and set in 1960 Montana. A woman whose husband left her for a low-paying employment opportunity, now she is left to care for and support their only son, which turns out to be a challenge after all.

Airplane!

There isn’t a funnier, more beloved or more quoted movie than this one. Starring Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty and Leslie Nielsen, Airplane! is a parody set around the disaster films of the 70s. It has given many a good laugh since its release in 1980.

Django Unchained

This movie is one of Quinton Tarantino’s best work set in the Old West. It follows the travels of an escaped slave, played by Jamie Fox, who teams up with a bounty hunter, played by Christoph Waltz who won a Oscar for his role, to save his wife from slavery.

Burning

This mystery drama is the best foreign-language film on Netflix. Jong-soo runs into a girl he knew from his childhood and she asks him to watch over her cat. When she returns, she introduces him to Ben, who proceeds to tell Jong-soo about his hobby. Jong-soo is mesmerized.

End of Watch

This is a gritty crime-drama that follows the life of two police officers, played by Jake Gyllenhall and Michael Pena, in modern-day Los Angeles. This film takes your everyday cop film to the next level and is definitely worth a try.

Frost/Nixon

This film is a historical drama adapted from a play that goes by the same name. This film follows the behind-the-scenes of the Frost/Nixon interviews of 1977.

The Hateful Eight

Another one of Quinton Tarantino’s best productions, this film is generally more underrated than his other works, but with some of the best character performances and plot outline, this is definitely one to look out for.

American Honey

This teen epic follows the story of a runaway who finds herself with a group of people travelling through the country. With a beautiful soundtrack and sensational cinematography, this is one of the best films on Netflix that people haven’t seen.

The Irishman

This three and a half hour epic based on the life of Frank Sheeran, an errand boy for the Mafia. This film is legendary, unforgettable and one of a kind as it gives viewers a look into the violence and risk associated with that life.

Drive

This is a forceful action-packed film that follows a notorious thief who teams up with a street racer to plan the greatest heist. But what they don’t know is that the authorities are onto them and they have their own dark secrets. It’s one of the best Los Angeles movies of all time.

Uncut Gems

This film is about a New York jeweller, with a bit of a gambling problem. His life starts to fall apart, while he continues to gamble and tries to sell a precious gem to save him from gambling debts. This dramatic thriller is riveting, anxiety-inducing and unexpectedly funny to say the least.

The Artists

This romantic drama is touching, clever, and mostly silent with a beautiful soundtrack. Peppy Miller falls for a silent film star, but things don’t go according to plan when her career suddenly takes off, while her partner’s career takes a downturn.

Hostiles

This film follows the journey of a U.S. Cavalry officer ordered to escort a Cheyenne Chief across hostile territory in 1892. Starring Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike and Ben Foster, this is an intense and memorable film.

Blue Ruin

This crime thriller follows the life of a drifter after he finds out his parents’ killer was just released from prison. He decides to return to his hometown to enact his revenge plan.  This movie is dark and almost humorous, and will appeal to those who enjoy the Coen brothers.

The Firm

This is one of the best legal dramas of all time. Tom Cruise plays Mitch McDeree, a law school graduate who is offered a job at a law firm only to find out that his place of work engages and protects a toxic environment. What will he do now that he knows?

Glory

This film is one of the best war movies currently on Netflix. Starring Denzel Washington, this film follows the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, the Union Army’s first black regiment during the Civil War. Denzel Washington received an Oscar for his performance, but this film also won Best Cinematography and Best Sound.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer

This twisted horror, about a man who likes to play god and a boy who likes to play Satan, is your type 70’s psychological horror. With a cast including Colin Farrell and Nicole Kicdman, this film is one to watch out for.

Atlantics

This African drama provides viewers a glimpse into life on the coast of Senegal. It follows the story of Ada, a woman who is arranged to marry a rich man. But when her true love goes missing at sea, only a miracle can unite them again. This underrated film is worth a look.

This is one many people have not watched. It is a beautiful tale of a woman dealing with the loss and trauma of losing her husband. It is an unusual film, but ambitious and captivating at the same time.

This might be one of Sergio Leone’s best films. With Clint Eastwood as “The Good”, Lee Van Cleef as “The Bad”, and Eli Wallach as “The Ugly”, this film altered the landscape of Western productions.

Another one of the Coen brothers’ masterpieces, this film follows the adventures of the outlaws and settlers of the American frontier. It is definitely worth a watch if you enjoy the likes of Alfonso Cauron and Orson Welles.

Helen Mirren gave an award-winning performance in her role as Queen Elizabeth after the death of Princess Diana. The film takes a look at how the royal family dealt with the death of Princess Diana, the media attention that resulted from this tragedy.

The Other Guys

This 1973 crime film is what put Martin Scorsese on the map as a director. This film follows two New York friends, one who tries to free himself from his debt to a loan shark and the other, who is also involved in all kinds of criminal activity, tries to help his friend.

The Naked Gun

Unexpectedly, this immensely successful film was based on the not so successful TV series, Police Squad!. It is a gloriously funny cop film that follows a cop as he uncovers a plot to kill Queen Elizabeth II.

Killing Them Softly

This adaption of George V. Higgins’ Cogan’s Trade that saw Brad Pit and Andrew Dominik reunited on the big screen. Many expected a bit more from the film, however since its release it has gained a strong and loyal following.

Da 5 Bloods

This is a captivating story, directed by Spike Lee, about five men on a desperate search to find gold in the jungle in a time of the Civil War. But this film is about much more, it shows deeply the struggle for civil rights during this time.

Total Recall

This thirty-year-old science fiction action-packed film still stands as one of the best. With Arnold Schwarzenegger playing the leading role, this film follows the life of a man as he tries to make sense of a recurring dream about Mars.

Spotlight

This powerful drama, directed by Paul McCarthy, is follows the lives of Boston Globe journalists as they uncover the systematic child abuse in the Catholic Church. As a Best Pictures winner, this is one of the better films currently on Netflix.

Miracle

This inspiring sports film, directed by Gavin O’Connor, follows the story of the coach of the U.S Men’s Hockey team and his inspirational journey to take his team to the top against their Russian counterparts, to prove to them that miracles are possible. Sports fans will love this one!

Dolemite Is My Name

Funny and charismatic Eddie Murphy is back and in full swing with this dark comedy. Eddie plays the character of Rudy Ray Moore, a washed-up musician who transformed himself into his alter-ego, Dolemite. It’s one of those must-see movies currently on Netflix.

Lady Bird

This is one of the most stunning coming-of-age films of 2010. This is a smart heartfelt film with Saoirse Ronan playing a young woman looking for a better place that is unlike her hometown.

Roma

Netflix has done well in cycling Martin Scorsese best work, and part of that cycle is this film. This adaption of Brian Selzick’s novel is one of Scorsese’s most renowned productions. This is a wonderful delightful film for the entire family.

The Two Popes

Starring Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins as the previous and present pope, this film journeys into the conversations between Pope Benedict and Pope Francis in a time where the former handed over his papal duties to the latter. This film evaluates modern faith and investigates how faith has evolved during the last century.

The Lobster

This dark comedy is also light and quirky. It is about a place where single people go to meet people looking for love. But what they don’t know is that after 45-days they will turn into an animal if they have not found love. This comedy is full of dry humor and worth a look.

Poltergeist

A welcoming home becomes the residents’ worst nightmare as evil spirits rise up. This 1982 supernatural horror film is written by Steven Speilberg, which is all the more reason to watch it.

A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon

Netflix does not have a vast kids’ movies collection, which is why this one is so great. A silent dark comedy, mixed with a little science fiction makes this film of Shaun the Sheep a fun must-watch for the entire family.

The Master

This film starring Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams was originally thought of as a dissection of the creation of scientology, however it is also about leader and follower relationship, trauma and doubt. It is definitely worth a watch.

This film, as a remake of Homer’s Iliad, is of Wolfgang Petersen’s most renowned works. With a leading cast that includes Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom, this film takes us back to old-school action movies while remaining relevant to modern times.

The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)

This film skipped the theatre premier and went straight to Netflix. The drama, starring Adam Sandler, shows very well how family can bring us together but also tear us apart. Joined by the likes of Ben Stiller and Dustin Hoffman, this is one of Adam Sandler’s best works.

Moonlight

This unexpected Best Pictures winner is a coming-of-age film about a young African-American who finds guidance from a drug dealer who encourages him to follow his own path. This personal and gentle film is worth a watch.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Silver Linings Playbook

This romantic drama, starring Jenifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper is easy to watch, slightly comical and surely worth a watch if you have not already.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Both versions of this childhood favorite are on Netflix, the Johnny Depp and the Gene Wilder version. This classic Roald Dahl tale is loved by so many for a reason. Almost every kid has seen one or the other version of the film, both versions are funny and captivating, and an unforgettable story.

Snowpiecer

An adaption of a French graphic novel, this film is set on a train, with the richest 1% in the front of the train and the poorest people at the back who are putting plans in place to get themselves to the front. This is an action-packed science fiction film that is fun and smart too.

The Squid and the Whale

This film looks directly at the effects of divorce on family relation, and also makes the not-so-subtle suggestion that parents’ flaws are imparted even more deeply onto their children. The main themes of this film are both individualistic and universal, which makes this extremely relatable.

There Will Be Blood

This is one of the best films of the 2000s. As an adaption of Upton Sinclair’s Oil!, this film is flawless and extremely detailed, and won Daniel Day-Lewis his second Oscar for his brilliant performance of Daniel Plainview. This is a must-watch film indeed.
