Long-haul flights: Just the phrase alone can induce a shudder of dread. The endless hours in a cramped seat, the battle against boredom, the unwelcome arrival of jet lag — it’s enough to make even the most seasoned traveler balk. But what if we told you there’s a better way? 

No, we haven’t invented teleportation (yet), but we can offer some tried and tested tips to transform your next travel marathon from dreadful to doable. So, buckle up, turn off all large electronic devices, and stow your tray tables. We’re about to take off!

1. Choose the Right Seat 

The first stop on our journey to a better long-haul experience is seat selection. It’s like a game of musical chairs … where the music lasts for weeks, and the stakes are high. So, how do you win? Use seating charts and apps to help you choose the best seat for your needs, and be sure to think about your individual needs, not what various travel websites may tell you.

If you love a view and have the bladder of a camel — or if you’re flying on a red eye and know you’ll sleep the whole time — the window seat is your best bet. The aisle is more appropriate if you’re all about legroom and frequent bathroom breaks. 

If you’re traveling with a friend, there’ll be a bit of strategizing involved, but be sure to think about your comfort on a long flight first and foremost. It might be fun to fly next to your loved one, but if that means sitting in a middle seat and you’re 6’8” and super hydrated, it’s probably better to sit in the best seat for you and reconnect when you land.

2. Prioritize Comfort When Packing

What’s in your carry-on can make a difference to your travel experience. Think of it as your comfort kit with everything you need to transform your tiny seat into a cozy haven.

For instance, a neck pillow can be the difference between spending your flight trying to nap with your head bobbing like a bobblehead and arriving at your destination somewhat rested. 

Equally as important is what you’re wearing. Wear layers to adjust to unpredictable airplane temperatures, and make sure whatever you’re wearing is comfortable enough to sleep in … because you won’t have a choice.

In addition to loose, soft, and layered clothing, consider compression socks for your travel wardrobe. These snug little wonders can help prevent a condition known as deep vein thrombosis, which can occur when you’re stationary for long periods. 

3. Don’t Skip Meals, Water, or Sleep

We’ve all heard horror stories about airplane food: rubbery chicken, soggy vegetables, and desserts that make you question the existence of sugar. If airplane food gives you the willies, pack healthy snacks like nuts, dried fruit, and protein bars to keep hunger at bay. 

Now, let’s talk about hydration. Airplane cabins are notoriously dry places; nothing makes you feel worse than dehydration. So drink up … and we don’t mean the free in-flight mini wines. Stick to water and plenty of it. 

Lastly, align your meals and sleep schedule with your destination’s time zone. It’ll help beat that pesky jet lag. If you’re going to need to stay awake for several hours when you land to align your circadian rhythm with the local time, take a nap early in the flight rather than sleeping through the whole thing.

4. Catch Up On TV and Films You’ve Missed

Long-haul flights can be a golden opportunity to catch up on your reading, binge-watch movies, or get lost in a podcast series. Most airlines have in-flight entertainment systems packed with movies, TV shows, and music, so you often don’t have to prepare your own entertainment.

If you’d rather have an activity, download a language-learning app or bring that crossword puzzle you’ve been meaning to tackle. You’ll arrive at your destination feeling like you’ve made the most of your time.

5. Stay Active When Possible

While there’s nothing wrong with vegging out during a long-haul flight and watching every Oscar-winning film you’ve missed over the past few years, it’s a good idea to get up and move around from time to time. 

Do light stretching in your seat, or stroll down the aisle. It’s great for your circulation and can help you stay awake if you’re trying to avoid jet lag.
