The California Highway Patrol reported a tragic incident involving three vehicles at the Walnut and Vine Avenues intersection around 6:45 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a 66-year-old man from Delhi, operating a 2017 TriGlide Harley-Davidson, was traveling westbound on Walnut Ave approaching the intersection of Vine Ave. Another Harley-Davidson Motorcycle traveling westbound with a 30-year-old man and an 11-year-old child was already stopped at the Vine Ave stop sign.

Fatal Motorcycle Accident Statistics

As per information provided by the National Safety Council, motorcycles make up a minor fraction, only 3%, of the total registered vehicles and contribute to just 0.6% of the overall vehicle mileage in the United States. Despite their relatively low presence on the roads, motorcycles are responsible for an alarmingly disproportionate share of traffic fatalities. In 2021, they were responsible for 14% of all traffic fatalities, 17% of occupant fatalities, and 3% of occupant injuries.

Using helmets plays a pivotal role in reducing fatalities linked to motorcycle accidents. Although there was a marginal 2% decrease in the death rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, motorcycle-related fatalities increased by 8% in 2021 compared to the previous year.

Over the past ten years, there has been a 19% surge in motorcycle fatalities and a 29% rise in death rates. These statistics underscore the pressing need to address motorcycle safety to mitigate the inherent risks of motorcycle riding.
