What to Do After a Big Rig Accident

Accidents involving big rigs can be frightening, and serious injuries can result from it. The right action must be taken after such an incident. By following these steps, you will be able to protect your rights, seek medical attention, and make informed decisions regarding possible legal actions:

  • Ensure Safety: Prioritize safety for yourself and others involved. Move to a safe location away from traffic and activate hazard lights.
  • Seek Medical Attention: Assess yourself and others for injuries and seek medical attention immediately, even if injuries seem minor. Some injuries may not be immediately apparent but could have long-term effects.
  • Contact Authorities: Call the police to report the accident and provide them with accurate and detailed information about the incident.
  • Document the Scene: Take photos or videos of the accident scene, including vehicle damage, road conditions, and relevant details. Also, gather information from the other parties involved, such as their names, contact details, and insurance information.
  • Gather Witness Information: If witnesses are present, collect their contact information, as their statements may be valuable for insurance claims or legal proceedings.
  • Preserve Evidence: Do not dispose of damaged property or alter the accident scene. Preserve any evidence, such as vehicle parts, skid marks, or debris, as it may help determine liability.
  • Notify Insurance: Report the accident to your insurance company, providing accurate and comprehensive information about the incident. Follow their instructions and cooperate during the claims process.
  • Keep Records: Maintain a file of all relevant documents, including medical records, insurance correspondence, repair estimates, and any other documentation related to the accident.
