Joe C., 46, was struck and killed by an Amtrak Train in Highgrove, Riverside County, on Saturday evening, June 3, 2023.

According to the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Bureau, the incident happened on the tracks east of 1200 Springs Street at around 7:30 p.m.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad officials conducted the investigation and have yet to release much information. It was unclear why the victim was on the tracks.

Castillo was pronounced dead at the scene.

There is no evidence yet that drugs or alcohol were involved in this incident.

The National Safety Council predicted a substantial increase in railroad-related deaths in 2021. There were 893 fatalities in 2020, up 20% from 744 in 2020. Over the past year, 5,544 nonfatal injuries were reported, an increase of 4%.

From 2020 to 2021, there was an increase of 21% in fatalities at highway-rail crossings and an increase of 20% in deaths from other accidents. There were 617 casualties in the latter category, most of which were caused by trespassers. We must improve safety and raise awareness about railroad crossings and trespassing to reduce these tragic incidents.

The data also shed light on the number of railroad injuries and deaths. In 2021, eleven workers were killed on the job, but more passengers were killed.
