The Riverside County Fire Department reported that the fatal crash occurred at about 9:30 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 10 near Monterey Avenue in the census-designated place of Thousand Palms.

A 51-year-old man was driving a 2021 Harley-Davidson with a 49-year-old woman in a group of motorcycles traveling east on the freeway. It reportedly veered left and struck the center median metal guardrail, causing it to overturn and eject the occupants.

The man was sent to Eisenhower Medical Center, succumbing to his wounds. The woman was sent to Desert Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. Nothing is currently known about her current state.

A 2012 Harley-Davidson occupied by two people was following behind. It also overturned on the roadway after losing control due to the initial crash.

Interstate 10’s eastbound lanes were shut down for roughly 20 minutes as the investigation ensued. It’s unclear whether alcohol or drugs played a role.
