A 33-year-old male pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle in San Diego on Tuesday evening, February 14, 2023.

According to the San Diego Police Department, the fatal crash occurred at about 6:45 p.m. on 4800 Pacific Highway south of Mission Bay.

The pedestrian was reportedly walking along the highway’s northbound lane when a northbound 2016 Lincoln MKZ driven by a 41-year-old man struck him. The driver claimed he failed to notice the man.

No further details on the identity of the victim were released. He suffered severe injuries and was declared dead on the spot.

As the investigation continued, the investigators didn’t think alcohol played a role.

The number of people killed in car accidents fell by 14% between 2007 and 2016, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association. Nevertheless, the number of pedestrian fatalities rose by 27% over that time. These numbers show the rising dangers that American pedestrians face on the country’s roads.

For the last three years, California has increased funding for pedestrian safety by 40 percent. To add, anyone can sign up for the Pedestrian course at University of San Diego.
