[02-11-2023] San Diego County, CA – Two Vet Employees Exposed to Chemical Spill in Oceanside

Two people were treated after being exposed to a Chemical spill at a veterinary hospital in Oceanside, North County, on Saturday afternoon, February 11, 2023.

According to the Oceanside Fire Department, the Chemical Exposure incident occurred at about 12:45 p.m. at the Mission Animal and Bird Hospital at 655 Benet Road.

Responders from the San Diego County Hazardous Material Response Team arrived and learned that a vial of Isoflurane had been dropped by a hospital employee. The chemical, used as a general anesthetic and safe in small doses, can be hazardous in larger doses.

Fire officials cordoned off the area and turned off the building’s ventilation system to prevent the spread of the chemical. Additional responders, including the Haz Mat Team and the County of San Diego Environmental Health Duty Officer, were called in.

One employee reportedly had direct skin and respiratory system exposure. As more workers arrived to help, one more was exposed. One was taken to a nearby emergency room, while the other was examined before being discharged on the spot.

The Hazmat Team contained the spilled hazardous materials in a container and cleaned it up. The building was shut down for a moment as mitigation efforts were made.
