Fatal Motorcycle Crash Statistics

Compared to drivers of any other type of motor vehicle, motorcycle riders involved in fatal collisions in 2020 had higher percentages of alcohol impairment.

Most motorcycle collisions occur at intersections, where the other vehicle violates the motorcycle’s right-of-way and other traffic laws by changing lanes, speeding through a stop sign, or running a red light.

Over 8.6 million registered motorcycles attest to their enduring popularity as a practical mode of transportation. However, any discussion of motorcycles must inevitably turn to their instability and inability to shield their occupants from severe harm in the event of an accident.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there will be 42,338 fatal car accidents in 2020. Compared to 39,107 fatalities in 2019, the rate rose. Roughly 75% of motorcycle collisions involve impacts with other vehicles.

Motorcycles only have two wheels, as opposed to other vehicles’ four, which makes them less stable. Consequently, the ability of the rider is crucial for maintaining control. Whatever the reason, driving a car, truck, or SUV increases your risk of collision compared to riding a motorcycle.
