[09-18-2022] San Bernardino County, CA – Possible Chemical Exposure at Hotel in Ontario Causes Physical Reactions

The incident occurred around 11:45 p.m. at The La Quinta Inn on the 3500 block of Inland Empire Boulevard and Porsche Way.

Local authorities received reports of a strong chemical that was affecting the 7th and 8th floors, with hotel guests complaining of throat and breathing issues.

The Ontario Fire Department, along with their Hazardous Materials Unit and Ontario Police Department, responded to the scene.

Michael, a hotel guest on the eighth floor, stated that he heard other people choking in the hallway and was startled out of a deep sleep by the sound.

He claimed that he felt as though he had been pepper sprayed while in bed. He stated there was no smell. He had a runny nose and a sore throat.

The guests were advised to leave the inn using the stairs rather than the elevator after an alarm went off.

Firefighters instructed everyone from the sixth floor down to shelter in place while those on the seventh floor and higher were evacuated.

One hotel visitor was taken in unknown condition to a nearby hospital. Other patients were present, but it is unknown if any were transported by Ontario firefighters.

There was a sizable presence of Ontario PD there. It is still unknown what caused the symptoms of hotel visitors to appear suddenly.

Chemical Exposure Injury Statistics

COVID-19 cases will be the most common cause of work-related injuries and illnesses resulting in lost time from work in 2020. Exposure to hazardous materials or conditions ranked sixth on the previous list.

There were 672 fatalities and 424,360 nonfatal injuries and illnesses linked to exposure to hazardous materials or environments in 2020. There were also cases of diseases that can be traced back to contact with harmful substances or environments. Non-medical drug or alcohol use contributed to 388 accidental fatalities. The number of deaths caused by opioid overdoses has increased by 431% in the workplace since 2011.

Injuries from car accidents can be surprising in many ways, and chemical burns may not seem typical at first glance. There are, however, some caustic fluids in cars that, if they leaked during a collision, could cause serious harm to the occupants. Chemical burns sustained in automobile accidents are frequently the result of deployed airbags. When an airbag deploys, it releases a stream of sodium hydroxide aerosol that can cause severe burns.

Try to remove any foreign objects from your skin as soon as possible after a car accident. Especially if you’ve sustained serious injuries, this could be challenging immediately following the accident.

Some irritants or corrosives may also be particularly viscous and difficult to remove. The removal of the substance is urgently required. Chemical burns can be treated effectively if first responders have the right equipment. Allowing an acid to remain in contact with your skin can increase the severity of the burn.
