[07-26-2022] Los Angeles County, CA – 7-Year-Old Pedestrian Fatally Struck by a Vehicle in Long Beach

A 7-year-old boy, identified as Gabriel G., died after being hit by a car while crossing 23rd Street on Tuesday evening, July 26, 2022.

The crash happened around 5:22 p.m. at the Lakewood Boulevard intersection near Champions Park.

According to the initial investigation, a 2005 Dodge Ram pickup truck was on 23rd Street heading west when it turned left onto Lakewood Boulevard heading south. The Dodge pickup truck failed to yield to a father and child crossing Lakewood Boulevard eastbound on 23rd Street when they were in the south crosswalk.

According to the police, the victim and his father were at the pedestrian right-of-way signal when the accident happened.

Authorities identified the driver as James B., a 57-year-old Desert Hot Springs resident. He remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

About five hours later, James was detained on suspicion of felony vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. According to jail records, he posted $50,000 bail shortly after midnight.

According to Armelia P., who works at a nearby daycare, it’s common to see parents walking their kids through the neighborhood.

According to Dominique Martinez, 25, who has spent her entire life living on the corner of 23rd Street and Lakewood, car accidents are common in the area.

LBPD has released 26 fatal traffic collisions to the public this year. Half of the 26 fatalities involved pedestrians.

Drugs, alcohol, and distracted driving were not considered to have contributed to this collision.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Pedestrians being killed or seriously injured on California roadways is getting worse. People walk more to get to work, school, and stores, or just to have fun, exercise, and be outside. Even though walking is a healthy, positive, and community-building alternative to driving, it is becoming more dangerous.

Approximately 1.3 million people die in car accidents each year. More than 7,000 pedestrians were killed in car accidents in 2020, about one death every 75 minutes. One in six people who died in crashes were pedestrians.

Pedestrian accidents typically occur at intersections, where drivers may be distracted or fail to yield to pedestrians who have the right-of-way. They can also occur when pedestrians are crossing the street outside a marked crosswalk or walking along the side of a road at night without adequate lighting. While these accidents can happen anywhere, they are most common in urban areas, where many pedestrians share the road with vehicles.

This can be prevented by building sidewalks, refuge islands, overpasses, underpasses, and barriers to keep cars and people apart. Increased lighting, better timing of traffic lights at intersections, and beacons that tell drivers to stop at crosswalks when there are people there can also be helpful. The risk and severity of pedestrian accidents are affected by how fast cars go. Thus, slowing down cars can reduce the number of pedestrian deaths.
