Harrow residents to shine at Korfball World Championships as part of Ireland squad

The Ireland Korfball team, including three Harrow residents, touched down in Taipei earlier this week, geared up for their thrilling international encounters at the 2023 World Korfball Championships.

Invented in 1902 by a Dutch PE teacher, Korfball is a ball sport played by two teams, each consisting of eight players (four male and four female). It’s similar to basketball and netball but has unique rules, such as players not being allowed to dribble, and the objective is to throw a ball through a bottomless basket called a korf.

The sport promotes teamwork and gender equality, as team members must be evenly divided between males and females.

The first match of the tournament, scheduled for today, will see the Ireland team face off against Taipei in what promises to be an exhilarating contest.

In this gripping 3-nation group, Ireland finds themselves in esteemed company alongside New Zealand and Chinese Taipei in Group C.

The competition is fierce, with England sharing their group with formidable opponents from India and the Philippines in Group E.

What adds a touch of local pride to this international affair is the significant representation of Harrow talent within the Irish squad.

Comprising of three current Harrow Vultrix players and three former players, the team will have their eyes on the biggest prize in the sport.

Notably, the Harrow Vultrix have been a consistent presence at Harrow Leisure Centre for the past 12 years, honing their abilities and contributing significantly to the local Korfball scene.

Harrow Online extends its best wishes to the squad as they compete for the world championship.

The entire community stands proud, supporting these talented athletes as they showcase their prowess on the international stage. Good luck to the Ireland Korfball team!
