Celebrity food writer Jack Monroe visits Wealdstone to launch new initiative

Celebrity Food journalist and anti-poverty campaigner, Jack Monroe, visited London’s Community Kitchen in Wealdstone to help launch The Big Helpout.

This initiative is a voluntary program supported by the UK’s biggest volunteer organizations, including the Scouts and the Royal Voluntary Service, as well as Shaping the Future.

The main objective of The Big Help Out is to raise awareness of volunteering throughout the UK and provide opportunities for people to experience volunteering and make a difference in their communities.

The initiative is open to all, and any organization or individual can join in with or register an event via the app. The goal of the initiative is not to make a profit or raise funds.

At the launch today, teams from five leading food charities in the UK came together for a cooking challenge, aimed at celebrating volunteers and raising awareness for their causes.

The event, which featured teams from The Felix Project, Trussell Trust, FareShare UK, City Harvest, and London Community Kitchen, tasked each group with creating a dish using surplus food. The dishes were then judged by a panel of volunteers and head judge, celebrity chef, and campaigner, Jack Monroe.

The event highlights the importance of volunteers in supporting charities that work with surplus food and those who experience food insecurity. With the increasing number of people who need access to these services, the need for volunteers has become more critical than ever.

Additionally, the event aimed to encourage new volunteers to sign up for The Big Help Out, a unique event marking His Majesty The King’s Coronation.

The Big Helpout took to Twitter to share news of the event, stating, “We’re excited to be launching #TheBigHelpOut with food charities today, including @LondonsCKitchen and @felixprojectuk, with support from the fantastic @BootstrapCook.”
