- The Southwest Monsoon in the country has started retreating after a delay of eight days. The usual monsoon onset date over Kerala is June 1, and its retreat begins from Northwest India around September 17.
- Calling “Protests as part of democratic traditions,” Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah said his government will not curtail the bandh over the Cauvery issue by farmer bodies and pro-Kannada groups, with support from opposition parties and some 175 organizations in the state.
- The Supreme Court on Monday called the Muzaffarnagar incident, where a teacher directed fellow students to slap a Muslim boy, a serious issue. Asking the state to take responsibility for the incident, the top court also ordered the UP govt to submit investigation reports within three weeks.
- IAF formally inducted its first C-295 MW aircraft today in Ghaziabad during the inauguration of the ‘Bharat Drone Shakti-2023’ exhibition. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh did the honors in the presence of Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari and several top military officials.
- In Tamil Nadu, AIADMK ended its alliance with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The decision was taken at a party meeting under General Secretary Edappadi K Palanisamy, citing TN BJP chief K Annamalai’s repeated attacks on AIADMK leaders.
- EAM S Jaishankar, who is in New York for the 78th UN General Assembly session, leading the Indian delegation, held bilateral meetings with leaders of several countries.
- According to a recent World Bank report, about 95 million Pakistanis, about 40% of the country’s population, live in poverty. Given the plight, the global lender has advised Pakistan to scrutinize policy decisions influenced by “strong vested interests of military, political and business leaders.”
- ‘India’s energy transition pathways: A net-zero perspective’ report by FICCI and Deloitte says India would need $15 trillion to reach a net zero target by 2070.
- Tamil Nadu is ahead of other states in EV manufacturing. Forty percent of EVs (4,14,802 units) sold this year in India (from Jan till Sep 20) came from the state.
- RBI’s deadline for depositing Rs.2000 notes ends in five days. However, nearly Rs 24,000 crore ($2.9 billion) worth of the currency notes are still in circulation.
