Now that you have removed the old doorknob, you have to remove the latch mechanism that is attached to the knob. Usually, it is the part in the doorknob which extends to the door frame. It keeps the door closed. Sometimes, they can be removed with some force. 

If they are attached through screws, find the screws that hold them together and use your screwdriver to unscrew them. After successfully unscrewing them, you can pull the latch mechanism out of the door. This is followed by removing the strike plate attached to the door. 

Step 5: Find the right doorknob

Before you move forward with finding a new doorknob, find the number on your latch. It should be either 2-3/4 or 2-3/8 inches. This number refers to the backset of the doorknob. It is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the doorknob hole.

Step 6: Start with the latch

Step 7: Add the knobs

Check the two knobs and choose the one that has a rod essential to connect with the latch and the other knob first. Slide the doorknob’s rod into the latch. Confirm that they are positioned over the hole and fasten it with screws. 

Now, pick the second knob and interlock it with the rod mechanism of the first doorknob. Tighten them with screws. Now, both the doorknobs are added. Finally, insert the strike plate into the doorframe.

Step 8: Test the new doorknob

After installing the new doorknob, test it repeatedly to make sure it is working correctly. Turn the doorknob to ensure that it is properly connected and that it turns the latch mechanism.
