Jewish Music Became the Language of Love for Choir Members Dena and Josh

According to Matthew Lazar, Founder and Director of Zamir Choral Foundation, “Studies indicate that singing leads to levels of positive feelings and satisfaction, and music in general has always been thought of as the language of love. It is no surprise that Dena and Josh formed a strong connection that lasted through the years and culminates in their marriage.”
The love of Jewish music led to wedding bells for Dena and Josh, past and present choir members of Zamir musical programs. They first met as teenagers fifteen years ago as participants in HaZamir: The International Jewish Teen Choir, a program of Zamir Choral Foundation. HaZamir has chapters in 27 locations throughout the U.S. as well as 10 in Israel.

This is the story of how Do Re Mi became “I do” for two choir singers. Dena joined the local HaZamir chapter in Providence, Rhode Island, where she grew up, while Josh was a member of the Bergen County, New Jersey chapter near his hometown. When all the chapters joined together for the annual concert, Dena and Josh connected as friends right away. Although the friendship grew into a short period of dating, they decided to remain friends during the rest of their high school days. They went off to different colleges and each ended up moving to NYC after graduation.

The love of Jewish music brought them together once more as they participated in Zamir Noded, another Zamir Choral Foundation choir for young adults (ages 18-35). The camaraderie in Zamir Noded has created dozens of friendships as well as many love matches. For Dena and Josh, this was the turning point where they reconnected, and love blossomed again — and this time it was for keeps as they are set to wed on October 15th in New Jersey.

Zamir Noded was created in 2013 to provide a high-level musical program for young adults (ages 18-35). The group has drawn singers from throughout the NYC tri-State area and beyond, including alumni of HaZamir: The International Jewish Teen Choir and others who are attracted to this unique ensemble. At a time in their lives when young adults are starting their careers and post-college lives, Zamir Noded offers the opportunity to sing in a Jewish choir with like-minded peers.

“Being a part of the Zamir choirs over the years has been critical to our identities and personal growth” adds Dena. “It’s something that we each understand about the other on a deep level, thanks to our shared experiences over the years.”

Josh proposed in the fall of 2022 with a Playbill he created capturing the arc of their 15-year love story in which HaZamir and Zamir Noded were prominently noted.

The Zamir Choral Foundation, created by Matthew Lazar, promotes choral music as a vehicle to inspire Jewish life, literacy, community, and connection to Israel. Matthew Lazar, Founder and Director of Zamir Choral Foundation, is considered the leading force of the Jewish choral movement in the US. He has worked with Maestros Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, Carlo Maria Giulini, Daniel Barenboim and others. The Zamir Choral Foundation is guided by an expansive vision of vibrant Jewish identity across the generational, denominational and political continuums through the study and performance of Jewish music at the highest level of excellence.
