DOT number cost: How do you get one?

Getting a Dot Number is not only a necessity when operating a motor carrier in the United States, it is also proof of financial responsibility. A dot number cost may vary depending on the type of registration you need and which state you’re getting it from, but they are usually quite affordable. Keep reading to learn how dot numbers work and what you need to get one.

When you are looking for a new job, the last thing on your mind is getting the Department of Transportation number. But this little piece of paper can be important to your business, and it costs money!

So, if you are considering working with another company, make sure they get that DOT number for you, or else you could be stuck paying multiple fees. You want to start by asking about what their process is to get a DOT number from them before signing any papers. If they don’t have one then consider going somewhere else because not only will it cost more in the end but also give you some time to look around at other companies as well.

What is a DOT number, and what does it cost to get one?

A dot number or DOT number stands for the Department of Transportation number. It certifies that the holder (the dot number owner) has met all requirements for motor carrier registration in the United States. It is a confirmation that you are allowed to operate a commercial fleet of vehicles. Your dot numbers will be free. But if you want an MC number, it will cost you $300 for each operational class you need to register.

Furthermore, it means that you have met all legal requirements and that your company is financially responsible. DOT numbers are required for any truck or trailers that will be registered in the U.S., regardless of whether they’ll be used domestically or for international transport.

How do dot numbers work?

A dot number starts with a unique dot number owner code, which is assigned to you by the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) along with your dot number itself. You can find out what your dot number code is by simply typing it into the FMCSA website. This code is private information, and you should never share it with third parties. Once you have your dot number code, you can pay a dot number cost and get your dot number assigned to your company.

DOT numbers are usually valid for 4 years, and they must renew after this period has passed, which also means dot number costs.

Types of dot numbers

There are three types of dot numbers for every trucking business or other vehicle: standard, expedited, and temporary. Each one is required for a different situation, and they all have their own dot number cost.

Standard dot number

The dot number cost of a standard dot number is $165, and it lasts for 4 years. This type of dot number is required if you’re planning on operating commercial vehicles that weigh more than 10,001 lbs.

Temporary dot number

A temporary dot number or “visitor” dot number costs $14.92 and is valid for 60 days. This type of dot number is required to transport non-perishable commodities. You expect that your load will change or be transshipped in the United States.

Expedited dot number

The dot number cost of an expedited dot number is $179.28, and it lasts for 1 year. This type of dot number is required when operating commercial vehicles that weigh more than 10,001 lbs.

How do I get a dot number?

To get a dot number, you’ll have to register yourself as the dot number owner first. You can do so by filling out FMCSA form MC-750 and sending it to the dot number registration department. You’ll also need to provide personal information such as your name, address, and social security number. Once you are a dot number owner, you can request a dot number cost by email or fax and buy one online.

DOT number cost is only associated with the state where you’ll get your dot number. If you need dot numbers for multiple states, you’ll have to get each of them separately, which means dot number cost per state.

How much does it cost to get a DOT number?

As for dot number cost per state, you can get one from the following states: Arizona dot number cost, California dot number cost, Florida dot number cost, Illinois dot number cost, Iowa dot number cost, Missouri dot number cost, and Texas dot numbers. On average, a dot state costs around $100 to 150 dollars, which means dot number cost can range from $150 to $250. Dot number costs may vary depending on the dot state you need your dot number for.

Is it legal to operate without a dot number?

Operating a commercial fleet of vehicles without a dot number is illegal. If you choose this option, you must prepare for additional dot numbers cost and dot number cost per state. You can get your dot number, and dot number cost online in a few minutes.

The dot numbers are necessary if you choose to transport goods across interstates. This means that the dot numbers cost is an unavoidable one unless you decide to forgo it. However, keep in mind that dot numbers cost varies depending on dot state and dot number type.

DOT number cost is a significant one. You should only get your dot number if your business involves interstate transportation of goods. DOT numbers must renew after 4 years. Dot number costs might rise in the future, which means dot state dot numbers will automatically be more expensive.

How long will it take to receive my new license plate with my new updated information on it?

When you buy a car or transfer the title to your name, you’ll have to change your registration.

“We start from scratch,” Charles Territo from American Traffic Solutions said. “All the red tape that must be gone through to get a vehicle legal.”

That includes getting new license plates made with their unique dot number.

“It will have to go on the front of the car, the back of the car on one side, on the other side on a different plate,” Territo explained. “That dot number is unique to that vehicle. You never have to worry about somebody confusing somebody else’s dot number with yours.”

Some Good Words

Those are some good words to live by since the cost of a dot number is about $25.

“The dot number does expire,” Territo said. “Just like your driver’s license expires every couple of years, so does the dot number associate with your vehicle.”

And while it doesn’t happen often – it can be costly if you’re caught.

“If somebody is driving around with an old dot number, it’s the same thing as having no dot number at all,” Territo said.

And you can bet there are hidden cameras everywhere that will catch you if you don’t replace your dot number. Right now, they’re rolling out new dot numbers for Ohio drivers. It’s part of a nationwide effort to crack down on license plate fraud.

“It’s also now dotted, dot,” Territo said. “So, it has three dots instead of two, and that does help us identify the state where the vehicle was registered as well as the jurisdiction.”

And sometimes those new dot numbers can catch you off guard when you pull up to the drive-through at a local fast-food joint.

“They did get locked out, and they didn’t know why,” Territo explained. “We had received notice that it was their dot number. We were just checking to see if the dot number matched that of the individual in front of us.”

That’s why it’s always best to check your dot number before you go anywhere.

“Just be sure you know it so that if somebody calls and says hey, I have a dot problem with one of my vehicles, they can give us the dot number,” Territo said. “And then we can determine what needs to do.”
