Working With Duplex Stainless Steels Sheets, Plates, Coils

Duplex and Super Duplex Stainless Steel are regarded as the best variants of stainless steel alloy. The properties possessed by Duplex SS are nothing short of incredible. These SS alloys have exceptional characteristics with brilliant chemical and mechanical properties. There are endless applications where Duplex Stainless Steel UNS 31803 Sheets, Plates, Coils
are used. However, firstly we need to know what exactly is Super Duplex and Duplex Stainless Steel.

Why is this grade of Stainless Steel called Duplex?

As we all know Stainless Steel alloys when enhanced by the addition of filler metals can be classified into three main types i.e.,

  • Ferritic grades
  • Austenitic grades
  • Martensitic grades

Austenitic grades of stainless steel include molybdenum which makes them highly resistant to corrosion whereas ferritic grades of SS have increased iron content making it structurally strong and durable. However, often industrialists come across applications that demand both of these properties in co-existence. Yes, you may think of Stainless Steel 316 here as it is extremely durable and corrosion-resistant. But there are certain applications that even Grade 316 cannot withstand. Here is where Duplex grades come in. The word duplex is given to this grade of Stainless Steel as it has a dual microstructure i.e., it is a perfect amalgamation of both ferritic and austenitic properties. Duplex Stainless Steel is extremely strong, durable, resilient, reliable, and also resists corrosion brilliantly. Additionally, the ability to withstand pressure is off the charts. Often Duplex Stainless Steel UNS 32205 Sheets, Plates, Coils are used to substitute grade 316 plates, coils, and sheets. But these are not interchangeable. Duplex grades Stainless steel plates, coils, and sheets can easily replace applications using grade 316 but SS 316 can never replace Duplex Stainless Steel.

Let’s discuss a few perks and features of Duplex Sheets, plates, and coils.

  • For applications that demand incredible mechanical strength, Super Duplex stainless steel is the best and most reliable option.
  • Super Duplex Stainless Steel has great yield strength and thus it can take on immense pressure and load.
  • All the best and top-notch features that one looks for in a metal alloy are present in Super Duplex Stainless Steel. It is strong, durable, ductile, and resists corrosion brilliantly. What more could one ask for?
  • Super Duplex Stainless Steel has a 50-50 mixture of ferritic and austenitic composition and properties.
  • Super Duplex Stainless Steel is considered marine grade steel which works better than SS 316 in terms of continuous exposure and long service life.
  • Super Duplex Stainless Steel resists crevice corrosion, pitting corrosion, chloride corrosion, stress corrosion, and saltwater corrosion easily.
  • Even at sub-zero temperatures, Super Duplex Stainless Steel provides high-class performance.
  • Super Duplex Stainless Steel Plates have low thermal expansion and brilliant weldability.
