Renowned artist Vera Molnár, with a career spanning several decades, captivates audiences with her algorithmic art created using advanced machines. Now, her groundbreaking work is receiving the spotlight in Sotheby’s Gen Art Program. 

Molnár’s collection, aptly named ‘Themes and Variations,‘ is a collaboration with algorithmic artist Martin Grasser. Together, they have devised a system that generates 500 unique pieces. These artworks explore the nuances of typography and the formulation of the letters N, F, and T. 

The series, which debuted on July 28, follows a sequential pattern where each piece’s background influences the foreground of the next, creating a captivating interconnected narrative. Molnár’s artistic expression has expanded as she incorporates a vibrant range of pastel crayons, infusing her works with a new dimension of creativity.

Michael Bouhanna, Sotheby’s Head of Digital Art, expresses his deep admiration for Molnár, acknowledging her as a true legend of generative art. Her decades of experimentation and mastery in algorithm-based digital art have paved the way for future artists.

Sotheby’s Gen Art Program collaborates with Art Blocks, a dedicated platform for generative art. The auction employs Art Blocks’ Dutch auction model, where bidding starts at a ceiling price of 20 ETH or $37,000 and gradually decreases over time. This marks the first time in the auction house’s 300-year history that this mode of sale has been used.
