Fossil fuels are the source of the majority of electricity produced all over the world. However, there have been international actions to urge nations to reduce their dependency on thermal power. This is because fossil fuels are a non-renewable resource that is depleting at an accelerating rate because of human activities.

Another major reason why countries are finding ways to generate electricity from renewable resources is that the combustion of fossil fuels to produce electricity is one of the primary sources of the emission of greenhouse gases. These gases are responsible for warming up the globe by depleting the ozone layer and leading to extreme changes in the long-term weather pattern.

Our country has also made significant progress towards utilizing renewable resources, most importantly Solar Energy to generate electricity. This progress is clearly visible in the breakthrough that India achieved recently in terms of solar energy. By adding 10 Gigawatt of solar energy to its total installed capacity for the year 2021, India exceeded 50 Gigawatt of total installed capacity. This becomes even more significant considering that India is on its path to producing 500 Gigawatt of energy from renewable resources by 2030.

Why solar energy is the way forward?

Solar energy is certainly the solution to all the drawbacks of thermal energy and is the best way to take a step forward toward sustainable development.

1. Solar energy is environmental-friendly:-

Unlike fossil fuels that produce greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide on burning, solar energy does not emit any kind of harmful gas. It is a completely clean fuel. Making use of solar energy to generate electricity is an integral part of our fight against global warming and climate change as it helps us to reduce the generation of thermal power and consequently minimize the emission of greenhouse gases.

2. It is abundant in nature:-

As I discussed in the beginning, fossil fuels are on the verge of running out and it is estimated that we will lose all of our fossil fuels by 2060 if we continue to use them at our present rate. The worst part is that the processes that lead to the formation of fossil fuels are extremely slow and they take up millions of years. But this is not the problem with solar energy because it is an inexhaustible resource.

What are the crucial steps taken by the government?

The Indian government has taken many initiatives to promote the use of solar energy for the production of electricity. Let us have a look at them.

The government of India took a huge step in the form of the National Solar Mission with the aim to boost our country’s energy security by promoting the installation of solar power capacity. The government body that is concerned with taking care of the country’s renewable energy is the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The National Institute of Solar Energy was established under this ministry. Another government body under the administration of this ministry is the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency, a nonbanking financial body. It was set up to deal with the financial aspects of the schemes and projects targeted at generating energy or electricity from renewable resources.

The government is also working towards advancing both on-grid and off-grid power. For this purpose, it promotes infrastructural development like setting up solar parks, the development of canal banks, and canal tank solar infrastructure. It has also undertaken the scheme Sustainable Rooftop Implementation of Solar Transfiguration of India (SRISTI).

I strongly believe that there has been substantial development and progress in this arena. But despite this progress, there are challenges that are holding our country back in terms of solar energy. The manufacturing capacity of the domestic manufacturers does not meet the soaring demand for solar power. Experts have been suggesting a circular economy as a possible solution to move further with solar power. They claim that adopting a circular economy can prove highly beneficial in this situation as it will enable the recycling and reusing of the photovoltaic waste in the supply chain.
