Juliet Anammah: Jumia Nigeria’s CSO Leading The Charge

Although saturated with men, there are quite a number of women doing brilliantly well and leading the charge within Nigeria’s tech ecosystem, and one such person is Juliet Anammah, the woman leading the charge at leading e-commerce brand Jumia Nigeria.

Under her leadership, Jumia Nigeria has certainly made some giant strides in terms of its overall goals and objectives, and this is no doubt due to the dynamic and excellent leadership style she has brought to bear on the operations of the Ecommerce Brand.

Juliet Anammah is the chairwoman of Jumia Nigeria and the Chief Sustainability Officer of Jumia Group, Africa’s leading e-commerce platform and the first African tech start-up to be listed on the NYSE.

Juliet Anamah is a business consultant with many years of experience in management consulting from her previous position at Accenture Nigeria. Anammah has more than 28 years of professional experience, and this spans several sectors, including sales and marketing, consulting, consumer goods, sales and marketing, and eCommerce.

Juliet Anammah’s Educational Journey

Mrs. Anammah has a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and an MBA in finance from the Enugu State University of Technology (ESUT) and the Lagos Business School, Nigeria.

In 2008, Juliet Anammah completed an Advanced Management Programme degree at the University of Pennsylvania.

She’s also a fellow of the Nigeria Leadership Initiative and a member of the Institute of Directors of Nigeria and other professional bodies.

Her Professional Career

She began her career at Sanofi Aventis, and held various roles in sales, marketing, and product management between 1991- 1999. She joined Accenture in 1999, rising to the position of partner/managing director overseeing Accenture’s manufacturing and consumer goods practice in West Africa.

She also serves on the board of CGAP, a non profit agency funded by the IFC/World Bank, and other DFIs and focused on improving financial inclusion in the developing world. In 2018, she became a member of the Nigeria Industrial Council, a group of private and public sector professionals appointed by the President of Nigeria to define policies supporting the industrial development of the country.

She was appointed a member of the Board of Directors of Nigerian Breweries Plc on January 1, 2022. Mrs. Juliet Anammah joined the board as an independent Non-Executive director. Her appointment was announced through a notice sent to the Nigeria Exchange Limited, signed by Uaboi. G. Agbbaku, the company secretary.

Anammah is also a member of the board of directors of leading Flour mills of Nigeria Plc.

Her Jumia Nigeria Journey

Anammah joined Jumia in 2015 as the ecommerce brand’s Chief Executive Officer in Nigeria, taking over from Jeremy Doutte and Nicolas Martin. Since then, the brand has made impressive strides as it expands.

It is interesting to note that under her leadership, the e-commerce brand has moved to solidify its position as the number one marketplace, as opposed to the retail ecommerce brand style in which it was operating before. This move, so far, appears to be working for the brand as it has encouraged more retailers to sign up on the platform, while the brand simply handles and provides the structure, delivery, and mechanisms to ensure that the best products are sold by merchants.

The brand has successfully pulled off its Black Friday deals year after year. In 2021 alone, it recorded a 30% growth in the value of goods bought on its platform, reaching a total of $150 million, the best year-on-year. This was contained in its report submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)

Jumia’s Black Friday sales started in 2012 and initially lasted for a day but was subsequently expanded to last the entire month of November every other year.

Under Juliet Anammah’s leadership, the e-commerce brand has continued to turn brilliant results, and this no doubt shows the quality of her leadership and direction.
