A Quick Guide to HPE Server Memory Types

There are various types of Memory modules for HPE server memory that are best suited for different types of server applications. We frequently believe that the only difference in memory is the DDR SDRAM specification, whether it is DDR2, DDR3, DDR4, or DDR5. However, there are various types of HPE Enterprise memory modules, such as Load-Reduced (LRDIMM), Registered (RDIMM), and Unbuffered dual in-line memory modules (UDIMMs), each with its own set of benefits for HPE ProLiant server applications. Memory for HPE RDIMM

Registered memory modules (RDIMM) improve stability by putting less electrical strain on the memory controller on a motherboard. Registered memory modules are frequently required for enterprise server applications that must remain operational at all times with little or no downtime. Most server motherboards can support up to 64GB of registered memory modules per DIMM slot, and 64GB is the maximum memory capacity for registered memory modules that can be purchased. RDIMMS are available in single and dual-rank configurations per RDIMM. RDIMM memory modules are available in 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB capacities.

HPE LRDIMM Memory

Load-Reduced Memory Load-Reduced memory (LRDIMM) enables you to install significantly more SDRAM memory capacity into your HPE ProLiant server DIMM slots. You can quickly achieve the best possible memory footprint for your server configuration by using LRDIMM memory. Most HPE ProLiant servers have up to 24 DIMM slots and a maximum memory capacity that is specified. The maximum amount of memory you can install is determined by whether you use Registered (RDIMMs) or Load-Reduced (LRDIMMS) memory.

For example, if you wanted to use RDIMM memory for your server configuration, the absolute maximum amount of memory you could install is 768GB (24 x 32GB). LRDIMM memory modules, on the other hand, have a memory capacity of up to 24 x 64GB, for a total of 1536GB. That is doubling the memory footprint from 768 Gigabytes to a whopping 1536 Gigabytes! Because of their large memory footprint, LRDIMM memory modules are ideal for server applications that run online transaction processing, cloud computing, and high-performance computing environments.

UDIMM Memory for HPE

Unbuffered or unregistered memory modules are referred to as UDIMMs. This means that UDIMM memory has no buffer between it and the memory bus controller, whereas DIMM memory has a buffer between it and the memory bus controller. As a result, UDIMM has a lower memory capacity and a lower overall latency. Unbuffered memory, on the other hand, is the most affordable memory available and is best suited for small businesses on a tight budget who aren’t looking for the fastest memory speeds. Unbuffered memory modules also have the lowest memory capacity when compared to RDIMM and LRDIMM memory modules. The maximum memory capacity for UDIMMs per DIMM slot will be 16GB.

Purchasing Memory

When purchasing HPE server memory, whether new retail or factory sealed, you can expect a variety of packaging options. Recent retail memory is typically packaged in memory clam shells with an official HPE warranty sticker. The memory module’s specifications are shown on the memory label below.
