The Ontario Skilled Trades Stream falls under the larger umbrella of the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP), which is Ontario’s Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). PNP allows provinces and territories in Canada to nominate individuals with the desired skills and experience to fulfill local economic needs. The Skilled Trades Stream, specifically, is tailored for individuals who possess specific skills and experience in eligible trades and are interested in settling in Ontario.

Who Can Apply?

To apply under the Ontario Skilled Trades Stream Express Entry, candidates must meet several key requirements:

1. Work Experience:

Applicants must have at least one year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) work experience in Ontario within the last two years before the date of application submission. The experience must be in a skilled trade listed in Minor Group 633 or Major Group 72, 73, or 82 of the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system.

2. Valid Certificate of Qualification (if applicable

Candidates must hold a valid Certificate of Qualification in the skilled trade issued by the Ontario College of Trades. This certification serves as evidence of the applicant’s competence in their trade.

3. Residency

Applicants must be residing in Ontario at the time of application submission. The OINP also accepts applications from applicants who are on an Implied Status while applying.

4. Language Proficiency

Proficiency in English or French is a must. Applicants must demonstrate their language skills by providing results from a recognized language test. A minimum of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 5 in English or French in all language competencies (listening, reading, writing, and speaking).

5. Settlement Funds

Proof of sufficient funds to support themselves and their dependents upon arrival in Ontario is required.

6. Intent to Reside

Demonstrating a genuine intent to settle in Ontario is essential. This can be shown through various factors, including previous work experience, family ties, and adaptability.

Application Process

The Ontario Skilled Trades Stream operates within the Express Entry system, which is the federal government’s flagship program for economic immigration. Applicants need to take the following steps:

  1. Create an Express Entry Profile: Create an Express Entry profile and indicate interest in the Ontario Skilled Trades Stream
  2. Receive a Notification of Interest: If nominated by Ontario, the applicant will receive a notification of interest through their Express Entry account.
  1. Submit Application: Once a NOI has been received, candidates have 45 calendar days from the date the NOI letter was issued to submit an online application to the OINP. The application fee is $1,500.
  1. Receive ITA for Permanent Residency: Once the application is successfully reviewed and approved, the applicant receives an ITA for permanent residency in Canada. After receiving an ITA, the applicant must prepare and submit an official application for Canadian permanent residence within the designated timeframe.
