Career Change At My Age?!

For those  corporate workers who feel signs of burnout are considering a new Career, the process of finding a new path can be daunting. Quitting without a firm plan seems like a leap of faith. Your age should not be a barrier to pursuing your career goals, it’s never too late to change if you find your new goals and can be committed to them. There’s no such thing as “the best time to change”.

However, there are many creative ways to explore new career options and find a fulfilling career that aligns with your passions and skills. In this blog post, we will explore some creative ways to find a new career for corporate workers.

Take a Personality Test

Personality tests are a great way to gain insight into your strengths and weaknesses, as well as your interests and preferences. There are many online personality tests available, such as DISC, Ikigai, Big Five Personality Traits test. These tests can help you identify careers that would be a good fit for your personality type. There are other tests that objectively measure a person’s logical thinking and numerical reasoning skills objectively. These skills are usually influence the individual’s ability to identify and solve problems in general, and also predict the individual’s level of performance at the workplace in this area. The questions of the test simulate tasks and situations that occur in business life. Other test measure the individual’s work-related behavioural competencies (attitudes, characteristics, behavioral patterns, personality traits). It is suitable for identifying ones’ job fit or potentials, therefore being effective in supporting selection, development and coaching. The test can also be used for group evaluations. (CAPTain

Attend Networking Events

Networking events are a great way to meet people in industries that you are interested in. Attend industry events, conferences, and meetups to get to know people who work in the Field you are interested in. Talk to people about their experiences and ask for advice. You might even find someone who can help you get your foot in the door. I’m often surprised how people are scared of asking another professional about their career development and when they try they are stunned how happy the interviewed person is. Everybody loves talking about their job. As part of your research for new career opportunities, talk to people from the industry you look upon, and ask them about their experiences.

Volunteer or Intern On A New Field

Volunteering is a great way to gain experience in a new field and make connections. Many organisations are always in need of volunteers, and this can be a great way to get your foot in the door or get acquaintances. This can also be an opportunity to make new connections and expand your network. Look for volunteer opportunities in the field you are interested in, and start building relationships with people who work in that field.

Take An Online Course

Online courses are a great way to learn new skills and explore new topics. Many online courses are free or low-cost, and you can take them at your own pace. Apert from Youtube, there are a number of professional platforms (Udemy, Coursera, Masterclass, Linkedin Learning, Pluralsight etc. ) offering not only knowledge, but sometimes certifications of international organisations or universities. Look for courses that are relevant to the field you are interested in, and start building your skills. If it’s something new for you, start with basic courses and make a learning plan and schedule your progress. Dedicate enough time for spending time on your study on a daily basis, even it’s only a couple of minutes, but be persistent.

Consider Freelancing or Start Your Own Business

If you’re looking for more flexibility and control over your career, freelancing, working part-time or starting your own business may be a good option. These paths allow you to pursue work that aligns with your skills and interests while setting your own schedule and working on your own terms. Starting a side hustle can be a great way to test the waters in a new field. If you are interested in starting your own business or working in a creative field, start by doing it on the side. This will allow you to have a smooth transition to build your skills and gain experience while still working your corporate job. Youtube will offer you thousands of options, but be aware that without knowledge, time and efforts you invest in the long run, there are no easy ways for “getting rich” from a side hustle. Affiliates, drop-shipping, printing or other businesses, let alone stinky crypto schemes usually are only marketing traps. What looks like a scam, sounds like a scam  is probably a scam. Use common sense, don’t fall for false gurus and “experts”.

Seek Out a Coach or a Mentor

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure about the next steps in your career, hiring a career coach or mentor can provide valuable guidance and support. These professionals can help you identify your strengths and weaknesses, set goals, and develop a plan to achieve them. Differences between a coach and a mentor are detailed in my earlier article. Look for someone who works in the field you are interested in and reach out to them. Ask if they would be willing to mentor you and provide guidance as you explore your options.

Embrace Technology

Technology has changed the way we work, and it’s essential to stay up-to-date on new tools and platforms. This will help you stay productive and communicate effectively with colleagues and clients. Take advantage of online tutorials: There are many online tutorials and videos available that can help you learn new technology. Take advantage of these resources to get started and build your skills. As with any new skill, practice makes perfect. Set aside time to practice using new technology until you feel comfortable with it. If you’re struggling to understand new technology, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Reach out to colleagues, friends, or family members who are proficient in the technology you’re learning. They can provide guidance and support as you navigate new technology.

Attend training sessions: many companies offer free training sessions for new technology, soft skills or software. Attend these sessions to learn from experts and get hands-on experience.

In conclusion, there are many creative ways to explore new career options and find a fulfilling career that aligns with your passions and skills. By taking personality tests, attending networking events, volunteering, taking online courses, starting a side hustle, seeking out a mentor, and embracing technology, you can open up new possibilities and find the career of your dreams. Finding a new career can be a challenging but rewarding experience for corporate employees looking to make a change.
