Thomson Expands into Global Markets and Enters Indian Laptop Market

Consumer electronics major Thomson is set to make its foray into the laptop Market in India within the next two quarters. Additionally, the company is considering exporting smart TVs and other products manufactured in India to foreign markets. Thomson, owned by Technicolor SA, expressed satisfaction with the quality and standards of manufacturing by its India brand licensee, Super Plastronics Pvt Ltd (SPPL). SPPL is investing Rs 300 crore to establish a fully automated plant in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, aiming to increase its manufacturing capacity to 2 million TV units per annum.

Thomson, which currently sells laptops in niche markets like the US, France, and other parts of Europe, plans to enter the Indian laptop segment in the entry, mid, and premium segments. India is one of the fastest-growing markets for Thomson, which re-entered India through SPPL in 2018 after a 15-year hiatus. The company aims to be among the top five global markets.

Thomson is in talks to export TV units manufactured in India to its global markets. The company is exploring opportunities beyond televisions, including laptops and smartphones. The move aligns with the trend of companies seeking alternatives to manufacturing in China, driven by geopolitical factors. Thomson is keen to motivate its partners in Europe to purchase products from India, citing cost competitiveness and quality.

Thomson’s expansion includes appliances like washing machines, air conditioners, and small appliances, in addition to smart TVs. SPPL’s Director and CEO, Avneet Singh Marwah, mentioned that the company, starting with laptops, aims to collaborate with Thomson to introduce more technology-based products. India, being the fastest-growing market in this category, is a strategic focus for the company. While specific markets for ‘Make-in-India’ products have not been decided, Thomson is open to exploring opportunities and discussions with partners. SPPL, with a portfolio of five global brands, including Thomson, Kodak, Blaupunkt, White-Westinghouse TV, and White-Westinghouse, targets a revenue of Rs 1,200 crore in the current financial year.
